Viewers have been left horrified by a ‘disturbing’ true crime series that has received an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 100%.
The TV show tells a harrowing true story, capturing viewers’ attention through its intense storyline.
Viewers are taking to social media and lauding the series, insisting the drama is one of the ‘darkest ever.’
One viewer describes the drama as: “Gripping, horrifying and believable.”
Another agrees: “It has you sitting on the edge of your seat.”
“A gripping but incredibly difficult watch,” writes a third.
Somebody else declares: “It’s possibly one of the best dramas I have ever watched.”
Critics have also praised the series, with The Guardian‘s Lucy Mangan remarking: “Watching it, you feel for once as if you are being treated like an adult in possession of genuine, perhaps even complex, intelligence.”
On BBC Radio 5 Live, Scott Bryan said: “It’s a very difficult drama, but I found it so compelling, informative, and educational. I have not regretted watching this, and I doubt you will either, it’s one of my favorite shows of the year so far.”
The ITV drama, featuring Anna Maxwell Martin and Shaun Evans, tells the of Delia Balmer, who survived a relationship with John Sweeney.
Based on Balmer’s 2017 memoir ‘Living With a Serial Killer,’ the four-part series follows the pair’s relationship after meeting in 1991 and how Sweeney’s behavior becomes increasingly controlling and abusive.
The agency nurse met Sweeney at a local pub and their relationship escalated quickly – he moved into her home and soon, his dark side emerged.
Balmer left Sweeney in 1994 but shortly after, he managed to force his way into her home, where he tied her to her bed, and held her at gun and knifepoint hostage for four days.
During this time, Sweeney also confessed to murdering his ex-girlfriend, Melissa Halstead, and two men in Amsterdam.
Balmer eventually escaped and reported Sweeney to the police. They only arrested him for holding her hostage and he was soon granted bail, per The Standard.
During this time, he subjected the agency nurse to a near-fatal attack that left her with life-altering physical and mental scars.
After evading capture for years, Sweeney was arrested in 2001 and given four life sentences for the attempted murder of Balmer, and for having four guns when he was arrested while on the run.
In 2010, while serving this sentence, he was charged with the murder of Halstead and the murder of Paula Fields, who he had killed while on the run.
Sweeney was found guilty of both crimes in 2011 and sentenced to life imprisonment.
The series shows Balmer’s bravery and resilience as she undergoes the police and criminal justice system to bring Sweeney to justice for his horrific crimes.
ITV details: “This is the story of one woman’s astonishing will to survive through physical and emotional torment, despite the failings of the institutions which were meant to protect her.”
Amid the drama’s praise, Martin’s portrayal of Balmer has particularly been lauded. Viewers say she ‘should be winning everything’ and describe the actress as an ‘absolute powerhouse.’
