Footage from a non-league football match has gone viral after a club-appointed linesman made what has been dubbed the ‘worst decision ever’.

The clip, from Saturday’s game between Turton FC v Poulton FC in the West Lancashire Premier Division, has been viewed nearly 4million times at the time of writing with social media users, coaches and players alike utterly perplexed by the offside call.

Turton manager Craig Allardyce, son of ex-England boss Sam Allardyce, told It’s Gone Viral: “It’s hard enough at the level of football we play at to work with players and take our own responsibility.

“No-one is perfect and people make mistakes, but that decision is one of the worst I’ve ever seen at any level of football.

“Thank goodness we won the game and took decisions out of anyone else’s hands.”

Chairman Pete Gray, who posted the viral clip to Twitter, added: “As a chairman operating at this level of football it’s not uncommon to see things that raise eyebrows.

“In the West Lancashire Premier Division each club has to provide a linesman after the Lancashire Football Association took liners away, so it’s always open to the odd questionable decision.

“The response on Twitter tells its own story. I don’t really need to say much about how bad a decision it was to be honest.

“He was in his own half with three players yards and yards ahead of him. Crazy, I’m sure the linesman’s very embarrassed.”

Specsavers were quick to back Poulton’s seemingly inadequate liner, however, tweeting in response to the clip: “Correct decision.”

Other than that though, there was little sympathy, with one person writing: “Unless he’s Usain Bolt, he was definitely onside when that ball was played.”

A second added: “Most linesmen at that level are volunteers from each side. One side per half on your own defenders.

“It is very very easy to flag too early when you feel a goal coming against you. Human nature yet with all its money the fa cannot provide officials for every game.”

Thankfully, Turton ran out 1-0 winners, with little thanks to the linesman.
