Great British Bake Off’s first vegan contestant is facing a backlash for baking a non-vegan cake on the opening night of the show.

Freya Cox, 19, took to Instagram to issue a ‘small disclaimer’ ahead of her debut bake on the series and shared a picture of her creation with her 11,000 followers.

She wrote: “IT’S CAKE WEEK!!!! Happy Bake Off day everyone. I made this cake to celebrate all things cake, inside is an orange sponge, lemon buttercream and toasted flaked almonds. All vegan of course!

“Wanted to add a small disclaimer before the episode, I was desperate to show the world vegan baking is just as exciting with the hope to inspire people to give it a go.

“For obvious reasons, I wasn’t able to change the technical challenge as it would mean the whole show was unfair.

“Sorry if this is disappointing to hear but once the show has finished I have plans to veganise the recipes for you all, so I hope this makes up for that.”

Fans were quick to share their thoughts on the matter, with some saying they were ‘disappointed’.

One wrote: “Ah that is really disappointing, I’m sure they could have found a way around that for you and for vegan future potential contestants.

“I did wonder how that was going to work. Good luck, excited to see what you make in the other challenges.”

However, others were full of praise for the 19-year-old and thanked her for explaining the technicality.

One commented: “Freya love this cake too much….and I will be the first to say that you stood by your beliefs and love for vegan food. Very proud.”

Another said: “Absolutely stunning. You have such a talent. Will definitely be watching and cheering you on.”
