A vegan bodybuilder who used to eat meat every day has claimed it made him ‘fat and depressed’ and meant he could never build the ‘physique he dreamed of’.

Steve Pilot has always led an active lifestyle and joined the German army as a teenager, but he says he struggled with his weight and mental health for years.

However, he claims that once he made the switch to a vegan diet, his life changed.

He told The Sun: “I’ve just celebrated 10 years since turning vegan. I feel healthier now than I did when I was 30.

“I’ve found it life-changing. Veganism is very popular these days and really trendy but back then, it was very uncommon.

“The entire physique you see I built on a purely vegan diet. I was able to have a fitness career in my mid-30s which I could never manage before when I was eating meat.

“Meat has lots of stress hormones in it. The moment you kill something, that animal produces adrenaline.

“All those negative hormones go into the bloodstream and into the meat. So if you consume meat you consume hormones that aren’t good.”

The 40-year-old is now an ex-pat in Thailand and also credits ditching meat with shifting ‘puppy fat’ and giving him a more ‘positive outlook on life’.

He believes animals and humans have the same rights, and claims ‘we are both animals’ but humans have just developed a ‘higher consciousness and state.’

He said: “That’s why we think we can dominate all the other species on the planet but we shouldn’t. Pigs, for instance, are incredibly smart and whales can communicate with each other.

“We should respect that – not just for your own health but for the entire planet’s.”
