Vernon Kay has apologised for a Jimmy Savile ‘blunder’ which aired during BBC Radio Two’s breakfast show.

The presenter was reading out messages sent from fans during an interview with the Soft Cell singer Marc Almond when he accidentally confused the convicted paedophile’s name with the Scottish singer, Jimmy Somerville.

Reading out one particular message from a fan, he said: “Morning Vernon, love Marc Almond.

“Awesome voice and so unique. His music has helped me through some dark days.

“I saw him at Pride and I think I was the first one at Hyde Park to run down and wait for him at the front.

“His duet with Jimmy Savile – erm, Jimmy Somerville, apologies – just blew me away. Absolutely awesome.”

Almond appeared to see the funny side to the mix-up and could be heard laughing in the background.

Kay then apologised, saying: “That’s a clip that we don’t want to ever hear again.

“Apologies, apologies. Jimmy Somerville! Rewind.”

Listeners of the programme quickly took to Twitter to point out the mistake, with many finding it funny.

Vernon Kay, you had one job. Don’t get your Jimmy’s in a twist,” one tweeted. “Please can he be a regular on Radio 2? I never realised I need Jimmy Savile level bloopers to get me up in the morning.”

“Vernon Kay dropping a massive b****** and getting Jimmy Savile and Jimmy Somerville mixed up is still better than listening to Zoe Ball in a morning,” said a second.

A third remarked: “Had a chuckle this morning, I was listening to Vernon Kay on the BBC Radio 2 breakfast show, he got Jimmy Sommerville mixed up with Jimmy Savile while interviewing Marc Almond. Priceless.”
