The phrase ‘choppelganger’ has gone viral as Gen Z’s new insult.

It’s the phrase that’s gone TikTok viral and you’re going to be hearing it more and more.

To everyone’s delight, parents have started to notice that ‘six seven’ has finally been replaced, with one TikTok user saying: “Is 6-7 done? My students didn’t say it alllllll week?? When I finally asked (not going to lie I was afraid to ask!) the kids said there was a meme reset over the winter break.”

Gen Z and Gen Alpha have picked up a new trend… but ‘Choppelganger’ is not as
harmless as ‘six seven.’

It’s actually pretty brutal.

In the past few years, dictionaries have been bursting with new word additions.

Colin McIntosh, who edits the Cambridge Dictionary, says ‘internet culture’ is to thank for these constant developments in the English language.

A few words that were officially added to dictionaries last year were ‘skibidi,’ ‘delulu,’ and ‘tradwife.’

‘Skibidi’ was first used in 2018 when the band Little Big released their song of the same name, with a music video that reached over 700 million views.

It was then popularized in the (horrifying) web series ‘skibidi toilet,’ which Kim
Kardashian
later got engraved on a necklace. How lovely.

The word has now been defined in the dictionary as ‘a word that can have different
meanings such as ‘cool’ or ‘bad’ or can be used with no real meaning as a joke.’

It’s basically a gibberish term used in ways like: “What the skibidi are you doing?”

Other new additions from last year included shortened versions of words, including
‘delulu,’ which was a play on the word ‘delusional.’

Another is ‘tradwife’ which is short for ‘traditional wife’ and used to describe a modern-day married mom who cleans, cooks, and posts on social media.

But while these are all relatively painless trends, ‘choppelganger’ is an exception.

What do people think of new social media insults?

Some people are getting tired of social media being used for relentless slander.

One Reddit user posted that teenagers ‘don’t care before speaking and how it will affect others. They go on to insult however they can and then play it cool like “Chill, it’s just internet. Nobody cares.”

Another commented: “Teenagers can be relentless; anonymity can give anyone the bravery to do and say whatever they’d like without consequence. Teenagers deflect a lot of insecurities and it just comes out especially on the internet.”

Others defended the younger generation, with one user saying: “bulls***. It’s run by
adults. and adults are worse than teens tbh in my experience. I say this as a firm adult.”

Young people’s use of social media has become a big debate across the world, with Australia banning under-16s and other countries looking to follow…

But the viral trend of ‘choppelganger’ has become another area of dispute.

What does ‘choppelganger’ mean?

The trending phrase is used to insult people that look like an uglier version of someone else.

It’s a mix of the words ‘chopped,’ which is a slang word to describe someone as ugly, and the word ‘doppelganger,’ which is someone who resembles another person’s physical appearance.

Teacher and TikTokker, Mr. Phillip Lindsay, described it as an ‘off brand look-alike’ or a ‘Temu version’ of someone (Temu is known for selling super cheap goods).

He found out the meaning after a student said he was Kirk’s cousin’s Choppelganger.

“This word is just beginning to pick up steam and I guarantee you, you will be hearing it from your teens in the very near future” he said.

Parents filled the comments with their experiences, with one user saying: “I’ve heard this already. My kids told me I was Uncle Fester’s Choppleganger. Harsh.”

FYI – Uncle Fester is the bald uncle with no chin in The Addams Family. Ouch.

Other adults embraced the word, saying, “I hate 90% of the stuff kids come up with these days but I have to give credit where credit is due. This is solid word play. Will use frequently just to annoy my teenager. My 15yo is definitely Brad Pitt Fight Club Choppelganger.”

While another added: “It cannot be worse than six seven. Let’s take this one as a win.”

They have a point – at least this trend has a bit of creativity involved.
