There is a ‘brutal’ cold that is sweeping the nation and wiping people out, particularly after Christmas parties.

Workers who attend their Christmas parties often tend to spend the following days affected by what unfolded at the social event.

Whether it is dealing with the world’s worst hangover, embarrassing yourself in front of your boss, or even worse, hooking up with a co-worker.

However, this year, more and more people are being hit by the flu, leaving them unable to work.

People have taken to social media to share their own experiences with the flu.

One person says: “My office the past two weeks has been deserted cos of that flu everyone got at the Christmas party lol.”

Someone else adds: “I have flu. Serves me right for all the Christmas party shenanigans. Farewell cruel world.”

“Mann… caught the flu at my job’s Christmas party [and] literally feel like s***,” expresses a third.

“So everyone in the UK is sick right now?” asks a fourth.

Another person pens: “My mom and I are both sick. My mom was sick the past couple [of] days but her fever broke.

“We went to an awesome Christmas party at the local GOP office and now I’m sick. Isn’t flu season the worst, and on her birthday too.”

According to the Mirror, flu patients needing hospital treatment have shot up by half in just a week in early December, while the NHS has noticed an increase in the spreading of norovirus – known as the ‘winter vomiting bug’, as per the NHS – and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

Prof Julian Redhead, NHS England’s director for emergency care, told the outlet: “This latest data will come as no surprise to those of us working on the frontline, who are seeing the number of people coming to emergency departments and patients in hospital with viruses like flu, RSV, and norovirus creeping up and continued Covid pressure.

“Demand on hospitals and staff remains high and as we experience more spells of cold weather and people gathering indoors for festive events and end-of-year celebrations.

“We expect to see a continued increase in winter viruses spreading in the community and in some cases, this will lead to hospital admissions.”

If you do find yourself struggling with the flu this festive season, the best thing you can do is to rest and have lots of fluids to avoid dehydration.

The NHS suggests you should begin feeling better within two to three days.

The Mayo Clinic also recommends taking a Covid-19 test if you do start feeling ill, as symptoms of RSV and Coronavirus are similar.
