Terrifying footage captured the moment a group of tourists were attacked by an elephant who trapped one woman underwater.

A horrified tourist captured the moment their small safari boat was charged at by an elephant in Botswana, Africa.

The group of careless tourists drifted too close to their elephant’s young babies, which prompted the the several-ton mother to attack their boat.

The canoe was packed with Brits and Americans, and the clip caught the exact moment the female elephant suddenly pivoted on the group, as they waded ever closer to her family.

As the tour guides frantically tried to paddle backwards, they quickly realized that it was too late.

The animal overturned the boat with its giant trunk, as the tourists tried to scramble away.

As the elephant began to walk away, it trampled on a soaked woman who was attempting to get away, but was briefly held underwater.

The clip showed the elephant calmly walk back over to her young as if nothing had happened.

No one was seriously injured, but it’s safe to say the tourists were left shuck-up.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, a former South African game ranger who reviewed the footage said: “They had a very lucky escape indeed because all four could just have easily been killed by that angry bull.

“The woman was lucky not have been gored, but if it had held her down for another few seconds, it would probably have drowned her, so she can praise the Lord he didn’t.”

“This bull attacked because it was protecting its young, and it seems the guides misjudged how close they could take the tourists safely and made a potentially fatal mistake.”

The crew’s personal belongings, including phones and cameras, were seemingly ruined.

The gargantuan adult elephant can weigh up to seven tons and stands at more than 12 feet tall.

Sadly, they only have one true predator threatening their lives, that being humans.

As a result, many countries have either banned elephant hunting or placed restrictions.

Botswana, where the clip was filmed and lifted its ban on elephant hunting in 2019, is home to one-third of the entire elephant population.

In 2025, all three species of elephants – the African savanna elephant, African forest elephant, and Asian elephant – are considered endangered or critically endangered.

They’re population has fallen by more than 86% in 31 years.
