A horrifying simulation shows what happened to the man who dissolved in Yellowstone’s hot springs.

A chilling computer simulation has gone viral after recreating the tragic final moments of Colin Scott, a 23-year-old Oregon man who fell into a hot spring in 2016 and was dissolved within a single day.

Yellowstone is home to more than 10,000 geothermal features, including geysers, mud pots, and hot springs, many of which reach temperatures over 200°F (93°C).

The springs are also highly acidic, as underground sulfur gases are converted into sulfuric acid by heat-loving microbes.

According to the National Park Service, more people have died in Yellowstone from thermal burns than from encounters with bears, wolves, or bison.

Deputy Chief Ranger Lorant Veress emphasized the dangers, per Joe:
“Because Yellowstone is wild and it hasn’t been overly altered by people to make things a whole lot safer, it’s got dangers. A place like Yellowstone, which is set aside because of the incredible geothermal resources that are here, all the more so.”

Colin and his sister, Sable, ventured off the designated boardwalk near the Norris Geyser Basin on June 7, 2016, in search of a natural pool to soak in – a prohibited activity known as ‘hot potting.’

When testing the water’s temperature, Colin slipped and fell into the scalding, acidic spring.

With no cell phone service in the area, Sable was forced to run for help.

By the time rangers arrived, only Colin’s head, upper torso, and hands remained visible.

Officials attempted recovery, but the combination of extreme heat, acidic waters, and an incoming lightning storm made it impossible to retrieve his remains safely.

When rescuers returned the next morning, Colin’s body had completely vanished.

Park reports later confirmed that the boiling, sulfuric acid–rich water had dissolved him overnight, leaving behind only his wallet and sandals.

Ranger Phil Strehle described the grim reality in an incident report, per AOL: “Due to the report of the individual not previously visible, a lack of movement, suspected extreme temperatures, and indications of several thermal burns, the subject was determined to be deceased.”

A video simulation, released on YouTube by content creator Zack D Films, visualizes what likely happened to Colin in the hours following his fall.

According to the breakdown, the superheated water would have inflicted severe burns instantly, causing shock within minutes.

The acidity of the spring then accelerated the breakdown of his body until nothing was left.

The creator explained that the intent of the simulation was to serve as a stark warning: Yellowstone’s geothermal pools are not hot tubs, but lethal natural features.
