Instagram Users Warned Not To Screenshot Chats
Instagram users have been warned not to screenshot chats as the platform gets a new update.
Instagram seems to be a platform that is changing constantly.
From new location-sharing updates, to seeing whose liked what reels, there’s definitely things we need to be aware of.
But upon the introduction of a new feature – disappearing messages – users are questioning whether they can no longer get away with screenshotting chats.
Because let’s face it, we all do it.
Whether you’re trying to relay a conversation to another friend, or gathering evidence for whatever reason, screenshotting has always been a handy little feature.

Other apps such as Snapchat have always notified users when someone has screenshotted a chat.
But is this really happening on Instagram?!
Let’s get one thing clear, on a regular direct message conversation on the platform, Instagram is not supposed to notify users about screenshots.
However, with the introduction of disappearing messages, things have changed slightly.
If the new feature is switched on, users will be notified of screenshots.
But it should be quite clear at the bottom of the chat whether ‘disappearing messages’ are turned on or off.
Some users, however, are experiencing the screenshot warning message when disappearing messages aren’t switched on – not cool Instagram!
But it seems that if your phone is notifying the other person, it’s likely a bug that should sort itself out in time.

Turning disappearing messages off is simple, and can be done following these steps:
- Open the chat where vanish mode is on
- Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to turn off disappearing messages
- The chat will return to its regualar self
It comes after Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg issued the same warning for Facebook users.
Facebook introduced ‘disappearing messages’ much earlier than Instagram, and warned: “If someone takes a screenshot or screen recording, a notification will appear in the chat.”
Vanish Mode first dropped in the US but later rolled out to countries in the EU.
In Zuckerberg’s warning, he said: “New update for end-to-end encrypted Messenger chats so you get a notification if someone screenshots a disappearing message.
“We’re also adding GIFs, stickers, and reactions to encrypted chats too.”
Don’t say we didn’t warn you!
