A lip reader has revealed what really happened during a heated exchange between a couple at the World Cup, after people began calling on the woman to divorce her husband.

The in the clip, which went viral on social media, the couple were spotted among a group of South Africa supporters watching their team take on South Korea during the group stages in Monterrey, Mexico, on June 25.

They were standing in the crowd wearing South Africa merchandise and waving national flags when cameras captured what appeared to be a tense exchange between them.

Once the moment aired on television, footage quickly began circulating on platforms including X and TikTok.

World Cup footage sparks calls for divorce

Sharing the clip on X, one viewer wrote: “How can I file for divorce for someone else?”

Plenty of others appeared equally uncomfortable after watching the interaction.

“Men ruin everything! I’m sure he’s busy telling her she’s spoiling the day for everyone and why does she have to be like this,” one person responded.

“Mood went from 100 to 0 in a split second,” another wrote.

A third added: “I could feel her heart sink into her stomach, because I’m also a woman.”

Other viewers were amused by how closely the camera operator appeared to be following the drama, even zooming in on the couple as the exchange continued.

“Wow the cameraman is seriously invested in this,” one person said, while somebody else joked: “Cameraman nosy af.”

Comparisons Coldplay kiss cam scandal

As the footage gained traction online, viewers began comparing it to the infamous Coldplay kiss cam moment that sparked a major scandal in Boston in July 2025.

“Must be the same Coldplay cameraman,” one person joked.

That incident made headlines around the world after a man and woman abruptly pulled away from each other when the concert’s kiss cam focused on them.

Their reaction led Coldplay frontman Chris Martin to joke: “Either they’re having an affair or they’re very shy.”

Social media users later identified the pair as Kristin Cabot, then chief people officer at data and AI company Astronomer, and the company’s CEO, Andy Byron.

Reports at the time claimed both had spouses, leading to widespread speculation that they were having an affair. However, Cabot later said she had already separated from her husband and maintained that she and Byron had only ever kissed.

Cabot also revealed in an interview that she endured severe online harassment after the footage went viral and subsequently struggled to secure work.

Astronomer’s board placed both Cabot and Byron on leave while it investigated the matter, and the pair later resigned.

Woman’s reaction leaves social media speculating

Although viewers have spotted similarities between that scandal and the latest viral stadium clip, the circumstances are not the same.

At the beginning of the footage, the woman can be seen happily dancing, jumping and celebrating in the stands. However, her mood appears to change suddenly when she glances over her partner’s shoulder as he looks at his phone.

She seems visibly troubled by something on the screen, or perhaps simply by the fact that he is using his phone during the match, and begins confronting him.

According to viewers, the man appears to brush off her concerns before putting the device away.

The conversation continues, with the man seemingly becoming angry at one point. The woman then withdraws from the exchange and sits down in her seat.

Despite looking over and noticing that his partner appears upset, the man turns toward the woman sitting on his other side and feeds her while continuing to dance and cheer.

Predictably, internet detectives have formed their own theories about what triggered the argument, with some suggesting the man may have been messaging another woman and others wondering whether he was placing a bet on the match.

Lip reader reveals what really happened

Nicola Hickling, a professional lip reader from LipReader Ltd, has said the narrative could actually be pretty similar to what people on social media suggested.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, the expert analyst said the woman had accidentally hit a young boy sitting next to her with the flag she was waving.

She then apologized and moved the flag away from him.

Hickling says the woman then noticed her partner looking at his phone and he showed her what was on the screen, telling her: “There is nothing to see, the lads took pictures and sent them.”

The woman then allegedly asked him: “Why are you looking?” to which he replied: “I’m not looking at other women.”

As the disagreement went on, the woman went on to sit down in a bid to end the conversation, before the man turned back to her to continue the exchange.

Hickling says he told her: “Maybe this is why I don’t mention things,” prompting her to responded: “That’s enough.”

Shortly afterwards, the man appears to have told her to ‘shut up,’ before she said: “I am sick of you always arguing.”
