A man has revealed how he won the lottery 14 times after finding a way to beat the system.

Statistics suggest you’re four times more likely to be struck by lightning than to win the lottery – but not for this Romanian mathematician.

For many of us, we’re lucky if we win our money back on a $1 scratch card, but for this man, winning the lottery has become almost inevitable.

The extreme odds allegedly don’t apply to Stefan Mandel, a mathematician who has won the lottery a mind-blowing 14 times.

His first two wins were in Romania, where he was striving to earn enough to move his family abroad.

His salary then was just $88 a month, and he managed to finally settle in Australia, where he went on to win the lottery a further 12 times.

But let’s take a look at how he did it…

What are the odds of winning the lottery?

The odds of winning the lottery are completely dependant on which one your entering.

For example, for the US Powerball lottery, the odds of winning are 1 in 292,201,338.

But for the National Lottery in the UK, the odds of winning are 1 in 45,057,474.

There’s plenty of lottery winners that end up blowing their millions, with flash purchases such as cars, houses, vacations, and more.

But the truth is that a lottery win could really be life changing, when the money is handled correctly.

Speaking to The Independent, Robert Pagliarini, a certified financial planner, notes that every lottery winner should have an attorney, a tax person, and a financial adviser.

He said: “This financial dream team can help you make smart financial decisions and help you plan for the future.

“They can also help shield you from the media and from the onslaught of money requests from others.”

Where is Stefan Mandel now?

Mandel is now living a quiet life in Vanuatu, a South Pacific island country, which is known for its volcanoes and waterfalls.

Now in his 80s, he has left his lottery-hacking days behind him.

He faced numerous legal battles throughout his wins, and was cleared of wrongdoing in most cases.

A number of financial troubles led him to bankruptcy in 1995, and chose to live a quiet and peaceful life for his retirement.

How did Stefan Mandel win the lottery 14 times?

The million dollar question…

Two key parts to his formula included buying lottery tickets in bulk, and printing your tickets at home.

First, he calculated the total number of possible combinations.

For example, in a lottery where you pick six numbers from 1 to 40, there are 3,838,380 possible combinations.

He would then look for lotteries where the jackpot is at least three times larger than the total number of combinations.

Stick with me.

The next trick is to raise enough money to buy every combination.

Mandel, for example, rounded up 2,524 investors to fund his attempt to win the Virginia lottery.

After that, he printed out millions of tickets covering every possible combination.

This was the part once legal, though today you would need to buy the tickets directly from a store.

He then delivered all the tickets to authorized lottery dealers, and waited to see if anything landed.

A key point – don’t forget to pay your investors.

Mandel ended up winning only $97,000 of his $1.3 million win in 1987, after paying back his investors.

Nevertheless, it’s a LOT of money.

But thanks to new legislation in the US and Australia, Mandel’s scheme can no longer be carried out.
