A mum has issued a warning over a clever ‘kidney beans trick’ that burglars are reportedly using to target homes.

Having your home broken into and getting robbed is undoubtedly a fear that everyone shares.

The idea of someone entering your property, taking money and stealing your prized possessions is something that many hope never happens to them.

But one mum who believes she’s been targeted by burglars has shared a trick they apparently use when they are choosing their next target.

The homeowner, from the UK, shared in a Facebook post that she woke up one morning to find that someone had poured an entire tin of kidney beans onto her front door.

Initially, she thought it was just a silly prank someone had played on her.

But after explaining the incident to a relative, who was an ex-police officer, she found out that she may have been targeted by burglars.

According to the former officer, burglars use kidney beans as a method to find out if people are home or not.

If they clean the mess then that is a sign that they are home, but if they leave it, burglars know that the house is free.

Taking to Facebook, the homeowner shared: “Well I woke up to this left on our doorstep this morning.

“Apparently this is a known trick of burglars. If not cleaned up in a couple of days they know you are not home and in they go.

“Thankfully I’m home and cleaned this up, whoever it was done this about 1am this morning. Look out for your neighbours, especially those who are on holiday.”

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, the woman shared that it isn’t always kidney beans that burglars use, but any tinned food that won’t wash away with rain.

“It’s not just beans,” she said.

“They use anything that you would have to clean up and that is not going to wash away with a bit of rain.”

Since the incident, the homeowner has ensured to keep an eye out for her elderly neighbours and has been making sure that all of her doors are locked and secure.

She wants to raise awareness about this trick so that other people know what signs to look out for – especially for their elderly neighbours or those on holiday.

“I posted about it because I wanted to warn people and get them to look out for each other,” the homeowner said.

“If it helps one person it was worth it.”
