A nursing student has gone viral on TikTok after explaining why men should always wipe after they pee.

In the video, Kenny He, a 19-year-old student at the University of Massachusetts Boston, shares that he wipes after peeing.

The clip gained attention when he replied to a comment on one of his previous posts relating to male hygiene that said: “Omg bro no dude wipes their schl*ng.”

Clearly frustrated, Kenny replied: “Everyday single day it becomes harder and harder for me to have male friends.

“It’s just basic f***ing hygiene.”

However, it seems Kenny is in the minority of men who wipe after using the bathroom.

In a 2023 YouGov Survey, approximately 22% of American men reported always using toilet paper to wipe or dab after urinating.

With only a fifth of men wiping after peeing it seems more men need to be educated about why it’s so important to wipe – and what happens when you don’t.

What do men say about whether they wipe?

Whether men, like women, should wipe after they pee is an ongoing debate.

There are many threads which both women and men argue over the need for men to wipe.

One person questions: “Doesn’t it dry out and you good?”

Gross.

Thankfully, someone replied with some clear logic, saying: “Would you sleep on a bed you peed on just because it ‘dries out’ eventually?”

While some of the arguments are just gross, some people raise some valid questions over the logistics of men being able to wipe.

“So why isn’t there tp next to urinals?”

“What are you supposed to do in a public restroom?”

They’ve got a point.

What is the reasoning behind why men should wipe?

In the TikTok, Kenny very helpfully schools us in the male anatomy, explaining why it’s important for men to wipe after they pee.

“This right here is the internal urethral sphincter. This contracts to open,” he explains.

“This is the external urethral sphincter. This relaxes to open.”

Kenny moves on to show the urethra, saying: “As you can see, that is a lot of real estate inside the p**is, in the urethra.

“There’s no peristalsis that happens in the urethra, like it happens in your oesophagus or your intestines.

“There’s no muscle that contracts to push the rest of the pee out.

“So no matter how clean you think your pee is, there’s residue leftover.

“There’s going to be pee leftover.

“Every time you take a p*ss and don’t wipe, you’re letting all of that urine build up inside of your pants.

“Urine is a slightly acidic substance, so if you let that build up in your pants, that’s just gross.

“I’ll concede and say that wiping your dick isn’t the perfect solution, but by doing so, you limit the amount of urine leftover in your garments after you pee.”

He finishes his rant by explaining that while it’s more important for women to wipe, as they have a shorter urethra, and are therefore more of risk of a UTI, the risk isn’t void for men.

“You can still get UTIs from letting pee sit for hours at a time,” Kenny informs.

“So please, do your part and wipe your d***.

“If women wipe, you should too! We both have urethras!”

What do the experts say?

Dr. Rena Malik, MD., a urologist and pelvic surgeon based in Newport Beach, California, spoke to BuzzFeed to comment on Kenny’s claims.

They share that Kenny is definitely not wrong about his claims in the video.

Dr. Malik explains: “What Kenny describes is very common, where men have a drop or two of urine at the end of their stream, and we call this a post void dribble.

“Now, if it’s a drop or two, it’s not usually an issue, and even if it’s a dribble, it’s more of a nuisance than anything.”

She said that UTI’s remain fairly uncommon in those with male g**italia regardless of whether they wipe.

However, the hygienic benefits of wiping after peeing reduce urine leaking onto the clothes.

Other medical experts warn that skipping the step of wiping can increase risks of infection.

Professor Christopher Bunker, a male g**ital dermatology specialist says: “The best advice for men when urinating is to pass urine with the f***skin full retracted, empty the bladder, then gently squeeze the penis a few times to expel any remaining urine.

“After that, dry the area with a dry toilet tissue- not wet wipes.

“Wet wipes contain chemicals that many men can become allergic to, particularly on such sensitive skin.”

Professor Bunker adds that retained urine on the p**is can cause lichen sclerosus, thrush, dysuria, tightening of the foreskin, and p**ile cancer.

Letting residual urine create a warm and damp environment under the foreskin can also allow bacteria and yeast to thrive.

A condition linked to this is balanitis, which affects up to 11% of males in their lifetime, as per the National Library of Medicine.

What do the public think about this?

It seems everyone has strong feelings over this debate.

Some women describe being ‘mind-blown’ as men not wiping had never occurred to them.

Bree from ZM’s Bree and Clint says: “You’re telling me a shake shake shake gets rid of any residue, any droplets?”

Clint adds: “I’m telling you we never use toilet paper for a number one.”

Boy moms are also getting involved in the conversation, and saying they are teaching their boys to be more hygenic.

One TikTok user says: “YES!! THIS!! I taught my sons to wipe after peeing. I don’t know why some people don’t teach their sons to do this.”

While the next generation might be safe, it seems current one is not.

“My dad doesn’t wipe or wash his hands and it’s like dude.”

Maybe not knowing you should wipe is okay, but not washing your hands? Gross.

And with men making comments like this, women have something to say.

One viewer comments on the original video: “These kinda tt’s just keep reinforcing why I want to be single.”

Another says: “My new question on a first date.”

While another asks: “How do I send this to my ex?”
