Optical Illusion Tells You Whether You’re A ‘Pushover’ Based On What You See
An optical illusion tells you whether you’re a pushover or not based on what you see…
A simple optical illusion is leaving people questioning everything they thought they knew about themselves.
At first glance, the black-and-white image looks fairly ordinary.
But depending on what catches your eye first, some people believe it can reveal surprising details about your personality, including whether you’re the type of person who gets pushed around by others.
The viral illusion has been shared for years across social media and personality websites, with thousands insisting the descriptions are ‘creepy accurate.’
Of course, experts point out that personality tests like these are designed for entertainment rather than science, but that hasn’t stopped millions of people putting them to the test.
So… what do you see first?
The illusion has three possible answers
The illustration can be interpreted in three different ways.
Some people immediately notice a pair of slightly parted lips.
Others instantly spot a row of trees stretching across the image.
Meanwhile, a third group sees the roots beneath the trees before anything else.
According to personality website Wake Up Your Mind, whichever image your brain identifies first supposedly says something about how you interact with the world, and whether you’re someone who’s easily influenced by other people.
Meanwhile, TikTok creator Mia Yilin, who regularly shares viral optical illusions with personality interpretations, has also offered her own take on similar lip-based illusions, with millions of people debating whether her analyses are surprisingly accurate, per the New York Post.
If you spotted the lips first…
If your eyes were immediately drawn to the lips, Wake Up Your Mind claims you’re someone who enjoys a peaceful, uncomplicated life.
Rather than seeking conflict, you’re happy to go with the flow and avoid unnecessary drama.
While other people may sometimes mistake your quiet nature for weakness, the website argues that’s far from the truth.
It claims you’re actually much stronger than people realise and fully capable of solving problems on your own.
According to the interpretation, you value honesty above almost everything else and prefer genuine people over those who play games.
Mia Yilin’s interpretation of a similar illusion paints a slightly different picture.
She suggests people who notice lips first tend to have sensitive and emotional personalities.
“You recognize the evils in society but choose to see the best in others,” she says.
She also claims these people are often willing to let minor disagreements go, not because they’re pushovers, but because they simply don’t think every argument is worth having.
According to Yilin, one thing they can’t stand is people who are two-faced or talk behind others’ backs.
If you noticed the trees first…
Seeing the trees before anything else supposedly means you’re far less likely to let other people walk all over you.
Wake Up Your Mind claims you’re naturally strong, independent and somewhat mysterious.
People often struggle to work out exactly what you’re thinking because you tend to keep your emotions private.
The website says you’re cautious about trusting others and prefer to let people earn your respect over time.
It adds: “You have a mysterious page that prevents others from reading or guessing what’s going through your head. You are open to all possibilities and results of the future to succeed in everything you imagine.”
Interestingly, Yilin’s similar leaf illusion also links this type of personality with confidence and determination.
According to her interpretation, people who notice the leaf first are naturally likeable and have a talent for making friends.
However, she claims they can also be stubborn.
“Once you set your mind on something, you will do it—no matter what other people say,” she explained.
She also suggested this personality type often struggles to fully trust others because they’ve been hurt in the past.
If you spotted the roots…
The final interpretation belongs to those who immediately notice the roots beneath the trees.
Wake Up Your Mind suggests these people are highly self-aware and aren’t afraid to admit when they’re wrong.
Rather than becoming defensive, they’re said to welcome constructive criticism because they’re always looking for ways to improve themselves.
The website describes them as responsible, focused and independent.
It also suggests people often underestimate them at first.
“The people you meet first will think that you are someone very ordinary, without talent or revolutionary qualities,” the website claims.
“However, this impression changes when they get to know you and realize that you are extremely competent and enthusiastic.”
Mia Yilin has also explored a similar roots illusion on TikTok, where she suggested people who notice roots first tend to be naturally sociable.
According to her, they’re comfortable in almost any social situation, often attract people without trying, and usually go out of their way to avoid unnecessary conflict.
Can optical illusions really reveal your personality?
While these kinds of personality tests regularly go viral, psychologists generally caution against taking the results too seriously.
Unlike scientifically validated personality assessments, viral optical illusions haven’t been proven to accurately measure personality traits.
Instead, experts say they work because many of the descriptions are broad enough for people to recognise parts of themselves, a psychological phenomenon known as the Barnum Effect.
Still, that hasn’t stopped people flooding the comments every time a new illusion appears.
“So accurate!” one TikTok user wrote.
Another commented: “I saw both at the same time and somehow both descriptions fit.”
A third admitted: “These always call me out.”
Whether there’s any real psychology behind them or not, one thing is certain: people can’t resist finding out what their first impression supposedly says about them.
