People have been left shocked after finding out they’ve been drinking water wrong their whole lives.

For many of us, drinking water seems like the most natural, straightforward habit in our daily routine.

After all, it’s just water — open your mouth and gulp, right? Turns out, not quite.

As more people learn about proper hydration techniques, they’re discovering that they may have been drinking water the wrong way their entire lives.

Water makes up about 75% of the human body and plays a critical role in every physiological function, from transporting nutrients to regulating temperature and aiding digestion, the Economic Times reports.

It’s no surprise that World Water Day, observed on March 22 and designated by the United Nations General Assembly, focuses on the global importance of water.

The 25th World Water Day emphasized the theme ‘Nature for Water,’ drawing attention to sustainable solutions to water-related issues.

Amid the broader conversations about clean water access and environmental conservation, small but impactful insights about personal water consumption have also come to light.

Diet coach Vriti Srivastav shared several tips that have since gone viral, catching many off guard.

People are now realizing they’ve misunderstood basic hydration habits, mistaking thirst for hunger or drinking water at the wrong times.

One surprising piece of advice? “Use a glass and go slow.”

Sipping water slowly rather than gulping it down allows alkaline saliva to mix with the water and enter the stomach.

This helps neutralize excess stomach acid. When you drink straight from a bottle and swallow too quickly, water rushes down the throat without giving saliva a chance to aid in digestion.

Srivastav also notes the importance of avoiding large quantities of water during meals, saying it can dilute digestive juices and interfere with effective digestion.

Similarly, many people confuse thirst for hunger, leading to unnecessary snacking. Staying hydrated throughout the day helps prevent this mix-up.

Temperature matters too.

While icy water might feel refreshing, Srivastav advises choosing room temperature water to avoid shocking the senses.

For those looking to kickstart their metabolism in the morning, she suggests drinking warm water after waking up to gently prepare the digestive muscles for activity.

The takeaway? Drinking water is essential — but how you do it makes all the difference. So next time you reach for that bottle, slow down, sip mindfully, and let your body truly benefit.
