People Are Only Just Realizing What Durex Stands For And It’s Not What You’d Expect
People are only just realizing what Durex stands for, and it’s not what you’d expect.
Durex is among the most recognizable c**dom brands in the world, with its products commonly found on supermarket shelves, in bathroom drawers, and even tucked into wallets.
Known by various colloquial names like ‘protection,’ ‘rubber,’ or ‘johnny,’ the brand is especially dominant in the U.K. market, where it holds the title of best-selling c**dom.
Despite its widespread recognition, many people are only now learning what the name ‘Durex’ actually stands for.
A popular misconception is that it stands for ‘During S**,’ but that’s incorrect.

Founded over a century ago in 1915, the company originally operated as The London Rubber Company. It wasn’t until 1929 that it adopted the Durex name.
Since then, it has been at the forefront of c**dom innovation.
Notably, Durex introduced electronic testing for its c**doms in 1953 and launched the first anatomically-shaped c**dom in 1969.
In 2001, it became the first brand to offer a c**dom that was both ribbed and dotted – called Pleasuremax.
Durex emphasizes its commitment to quality on its website, stating: “We’ve been making c**doms with the finest raw materials since 1929, so we know a thing or two about performance. And we don’t just mean in the bedroom (or wherever you’re doing it).”
The company assures users that its c**doms are rigorously tested for holes and comfort and that they consistently outperform global standards for quality.
In a 2023 study conducted by Durex, it was revealed that many British men are using the wrong c**dom size – often opting for a standard fit despite knowing it doesn’t suit them.
This reluctance to buy the appropriate size, whether smaller or larger, stems largely from embarrassment.
To address this issue, the company launched an online fitting tool designed to help individuals find the right fit without shame.

The real meaning behind the brand name was brought to light again recently by Preply, an online language learning platform.
This revelation has surprised many people online.
One social media user commented: “I thought it was an acronym for DURing s**,” while a post on X (formerly Twitter) read: “What I learned today: The Durex name stands for DUrability, Reliability, EXcellence.”
Even Professor Helen Ward from Imperial College London admitted: “I didn’t know that Durex stands for DUrability, Reliability, EXcellence.”
