Mom Lets Daughter Change ‘Racist’ Name After School Bullying
A mom has allowed her daughter to change her name after bullying at school and accusations of racism.
35-year-old Danielle Remp, from Tennessee, explained on TikTok why she let her 16-year-old scrap her given name.
She said: “She gets made fun of for it… I said yes, no questions asked!”
Danielle supported her daughter’s decision after kids at school mocked her for her name, and accused her of ‘racism’ and supporting the Civil War-era South.
The mom, who works at Burger King, is now saving up $200 to cover the legal change of name.

She said: “She’s a good kid.
“She’s doing great in school, she doesn’t give me trouble.
“So if changing her name makes her feel better about herself, why would I say no?”
Some have criticized the mom
The TikTok post prompted hundreds of comments, with some criticizing her for bending to her teenager.
One person wrote: “What no. Teach your child resilience. If you let her change her name, what else will she want to change about herself?”
Another commenter, who shares the same name as Danielle’s daughter, added: “I got bullied but now I love my name.”
However, others praised the move, saying “everyone should get one free name change.”
Another said: “As someone who was horrendously bullied for their birth name growing up and changed it as an adult, thank you.”
Daughter suffered from constant bullying
Danielle’s daughter Dixie, who now goes by ‘Skye,’ said she was constantly bullied and taunted about the name between classes.
She told told Today.com: “They call me things like ‘Dixie Dust,’ or ‘Dixie Normous.
“They just give it all sorts of crude meanings, and they’ll call me that in the hallway.”
She added her dad named her Dixie when she was born but her mom wanted to name her Skye. She said her mom’s choice feels more ‘like me.’
Why can the name be seen as racist?

The term Dixie became after a song titled ‘Dixie’s Land’ became the unofficial anthem of the Confederacy in the 1800s.
The word has become controversial in recent years because of its association with the South’s pro-slavery past.
For example, the band The Dixie Chicks changed its name to The Chicks in 2020 to ‘meet this moment’ after hearing about its deeper meaning.
What do you think? Should Danielle have allowed her daughter to change her name, or should she have told her to keep it?
