Although tipping is not mandatory in the U.S., diners are often expected to add a gratuity.

The average tip is 15 to 20 percent of the total meal cost, with 25 percent sometimes awarded for excellent service.

But tipping is not expected everywhere in the world.

In the U.K., tips are discretionary and depend on the quality of the service you receive.

It is customary to leave 10 to 15 percent of the bill when eating out, but it isn’t customary to pay a tip for fast food, self-service, or takeaway meals.

Now, a server from Nashville, Tennessee, has sparked a huge debate on the matter after sharing her paycheck online.

The server, known only as Liny, has received support from TikTok viewers after sharing her story.

A fellow waitress said: “As a server, we truly live off our tips.”

Another added: “Common courtesy to tip… I always tip more than I should, but that’s because they deserve to be paid.”

“Do not eat out if you aren’t willing to tip,” somebody else commented. “That simple.”

A fourth person wrote: “When someone is taking your order and bringing your food, they are providing a service…”

Yet others have taken to the comments section to say that servers shouldn’t rely on receiving tips.

“It’s not my job to pay your bills, I got my own to pay,” one viewer penned.

Another commented: “I am tired of the entitled attitudes of servers. Too many think tips are automatic, no matter how bad the service.”

In the viral TikTok video, the server claims that after taxes, including Medicare, she was paid just $0.01.

Outraged, she wrote in the caption: “The f*** I’m gonna do with one penny Steven!”

She added: “Life of a server… this is 6 weeks of ‘pay.’ Tip your servers!!!”

The federal minimum wage for tipped employees in the U.S. is $2.13 an hour, yet for every paycheck, 6.2% is removed for social security taxes and 1.45% for Medicare taxes.

Paid employees are also required to pay income taxes. The government will determine how much you owe based on the money you receive from earned income.

This meant that while Liny earned a reasonable gross income from her job, she was essentially left with nothing after taxes.
