Standing between two large mirrors, the photo initially appeared completely normal.
But after taking a closer look, both Coates and her followers noticed something deeply unsettling.
In the image, her body appears in three different positions at the same time.
While her actual stance remains fixed in the center, her reflections seem to show her arms and hands positioned differently in each mirror.

The bizarre photograph quickly exploded online as viewers tried to work out what they were seeing.
Some suggested it looked like evidence of parallel universes colliding, while others compared it to scenes from dystopian science-fiction shows.

Others joked that Coates had accidentally discovered alternate versions of herself hidden inside the mirrors.

Even experts struggled to explain it
The photo confused people so much that Coates began searching for answers herself.
She first returned to the bridal shop to make sure the mirrors were actually mirrors.
She then consulted friends and technology experts, who were equally perplexed.
According to Coates, one tech worker showed the image to several colleagues, all of whom struggled to explain what they were seeing.
The mystery eventually became so frustrating that she visited an Apple Store seeking professional help.
After waiting hours to speak with an employee, she finally received an explanation.
Even then, she was told the situation was highly unusual.

As theories continued spreading online, many people became convinced something impossible had happened.
The photo was not edited. It was not a panorama. It was not a Live Photo.
Those facts only added to the confusion.
Coates admitted the image disturbed her so much that she experienced what she described as a near panic attack after noticing the discrepancy.
She later revealed she was walking through London when her sister first pointed out the problem.
The realization reportedly left her feeling physically sick.
“I was freaking out,” she later admitted.

The real explanation behind the creepy reflection
After examining the photo, an Apple employee finally identified what had happened, per Bored Panda.
According to the explanation, modern smartphones do not simply capture a single instant when taking a picture.
Instead, they rapidly record multiple images in fractions of a second and use software to combine them into what the device believes is the best final version.
At the exact moment Coates’ phone was capturing the image, she appears to have slightly moved her arms.
The phone’s software then stitched together different moments from the sequence.
As a result, one side of the image captured one arm position while the opposite side captured another.
The effect became dramatically more noticeable because of the mirrors, creating the illusion that three different versions of Coates existed simultaneously.
A particularly observant social media user later discovered a tiny seam running down the back of the image where the two photographs had been merged together.
The Apple employee reportedly described the bizarre result as a ‘one-in-a-million chance,’ a perfect combination of timing, reflections, movement, and image-processing software that created one of the strangest wedding dress photos the internet has ever seen.
