Woman Gets Cute Matching Tattoo With Friend – Then People Point Out Embarrassing Detail She Never Noticed
A woman got a matching tattoo with her friend, but people were quick to point out an embarrassing detail she never noticed…
Getting a matching tattoo with your best friend is supposed to be a lifelong reminder of your bond.
But one woman was left wishing she’d looked a little closer before getting inked after her sentimental design accidentally resembled something far more X-rated.
The awkward mishap quickly went viral on TikTok, where millions of people admitted they couldn’t unsee what the tattoo actually looked like.
And while some viewers blamed the tattoo artist, others argued the problem had been there all along.
The matching tattoo seemed like a sweet idea
TikToker Alaina Nicole (@ianicole001) wanted to celebrate her friendship with a meaningful matching tattoo.
Rather than getting identical designs, the pair decided on something a little more unique.
Each friend would have one half of a butterfly tattooed onto their arm.
When they stood next to one another, the two halves would line up to create one complete butterfly, similar to the friendship necklaces that were hugely popular in the 1990s.
It sounded like the perfect tribute.
There was just one problem.
When viewed separately, each half of the butterfly didn’t really resemble a butterfly at all.
Instead, many people thought the design looked suspiciously like male anatomy.
Nicole’s reaction after seeing the finished tattoo said it all.
People couldn’t believe what they were seeing
The TikToker shared her experience online alongside footage showing the completed tattoo.
She joked: “When you try to get cute matching bestie tattoos and you get two limp d***s instead!”
The video quickly exploded, with viewers flooding the comments section after spotting the unfortunate resemblance.
Many people were convinced the tattoo artist must have known exactly what they were doing.
“Whoever did this knew. They knew,” one person commented.
Another agreed: “The tattoo artist definitely knew.”
A third joked: “I would actually cry.”
Others admitted they couldn’t stop laughing after seeing the design.
One viewer wrote: “I can’t unsee it now.”
Another added: “This is honestly one of the funniest tattoo fails I’ve ever seen.”

Not everyone blamed the tattoo artist
However, plenty of viewers defended the artist after Nicole later revealed the original reference image.
Once people compared the finished tattoo with the design the friends had requested, opinions quickly changed.
“I mean… that’s literally what you asked for,” one person pointed out.
Another wrote: “It actually looks exactly like the reference.”
A third agreed: “I don’t think the artist is at fault here.”
Some argued the issue wasn’t the artwork itself but simply where it had been placed.
“I think it’s the placement,” one commenter suggested. “It would’ve looked much better on your fingers.”
Others offered practical solutions rather than criticism.
One person suggested the pair complete the missing butterfly wings individually so each tattoo would make sense on its own.
Another recommended colouring opposite halves of the butterfly so both tattoos would look complete even when the friends weren’t standing together.
The story has a happy ending
Fortunately, Nicole didn’t have to live with the unfortunate design forever.
After the video went viral, she later revealed that both she and her friend decided to alter their tattoos.
The pair worked with their artist to transform the original design into a complete butterfly on each of their arms.
The updated tattoos still represent their friendship—but without inviting quite so many awkward questions from strangers.
The story has since become one of TikTok’s most memorable tattoo mishaps, with countless people using it as a reminder to think carefully about how a design will look on its own before committing to permanent ink.
After all, what seems like a beautiful idea on paper can sometimes end up looking completely different once it’s actually tattooed onto your skin.
And, in this case, viewers agreed there was one very obvious reason the original design went viral.
