Women Reveal Their Preferred Height For A Man In Study
In a recent study, women revealed their preferred height for a male partner.
Although physical attributes shouldn’t be the sole factor in choosing a partner, many individuals express preferences for certain characteristics – including height – when seeking a relationship.
This study sought to understand those preferences more objectively by surveying over 500 participants between the ages of 15 and 77 from Cuba, Canada, the United States, and Norway.
Researchers collected data by first recording the actual heights of participants.
Then, using illustrated line drawings depicting individuals of different heights, participants selected their preferred partner height for short-term and long-term relationships.
The study found that height preferences differed significantly between men and women, confirming the presence of common social perceptions regarding height in romantic relationships.

The average male participant measured 5 feet 10 inches (178 cm), while the average female participant stood at 5 feet 5 inches (165 cm).
Despite these averages, when asked about their ideal partner height, men generally preferred women to be slightly shorter than them – by approximately one inch (2.5 cm).
On the other hand, women indicated a preference for men to be taller, selecting an average height just under an inch (2.3 cm) above the male mean.
Interestingly, the study also found that men favored shorter women for short-term relationships.
The reason behind this preference remains open to speculation, but researchers noted that expectations for long-term and short-term relationships may influence partner selection in various ways.

As the researchers stated: “These results provide preliminary evidence that, in addition to mate preferences for other physical traits related to mate quality such as masculinity in the body, face, and voice, assortative preferences for height do vary as a function of expected relationship length, but this was surprisingly only observed in preferences for female height.”
While these findings provide a useful glimpse into height preferences, there are some limitations to consider.
The sample size, though relatively diverse in terms of age and location, remains limited.
Additionally, the method of using static visual representations to determine attraction could oversimplify real-world dating dynamics.
Future research with broader international representation and more nuanced testing methods could yield even deeper insights.

A separate study conducted by YouGov investigated broader public opinions on height and found that the ‘ideal’ height for a male partner is 5 feet 11 inches, while the preferred height for a female partner is 5 feet 6 inches.
According to this research, women generally find men under 5 feet 4 inches too short and those over 6 feet 3 inches too tall.
Conversely, men believe women below 4 feet 11 inches are too short, while those exceeding 6 feet are too tall.
The study also highlighted that height preferences vary depending on an individual’s height.
For example, women between 5 feet and 5 feet 7 inches found 5 feet 11 inches ideal, whereas taller women (above 5 feet 7 inches) preferred men around 6 feet 1 inch.
Similarly, nearly half of men between 6 feet and 6 feet 3 inches sought partners between 5 feet 8 inches and 5 feet 11 inches, while only 26% of men between 5 feet 8 inches and 5 feet 11 inches had the same preference.
