Whoopi Goldberg, who recently caused outrage with her thoughts on the Holocaust, sparked a debate with The View fans after discussing abortion.
The 66-year-old, who has previously revealed that she had an illegal termination when she was younger, was discussing the Supreme Court and its plans to overturn the Roe v. Wade case on the programme when she said: “This is my body!”
Starting her statement, she called out: “You got people telling me I gotta wear a mask, or don’t wear a mask, or do this. Everybody wants to tell me what to do! This is my body!
Watch Whoopi Goldberg make the comment below…
“My doctor, and myself, and my child – that’s who makes the decision [about abortion].”
Appearing to hold back tears, she continued: “Women, when they decide something is not right for them, they’re going to take it into their own hands.
“We got tired of tripping over [other] women in public bathrooms who were giving themselves abortions because there was nowhere safe, nowhere clean, nowhere to go.
“It is a hard, awful decision that people make. If you don’t have the wherewithal to understand that, to start the conversation with, ‘I know how hard this must be for you,’ if you’re starting it by telling me I’m going to burn in hell, then you’re not looking out for me as a human being, whether I subscribe to your religion or not, and that is not okay.”
Whoopi Goldberg Demands ‘Apology’ From Royal Family
Social media users were divided in their reaction to the remarks, with some stating that they agreed with the actress.
“Whoopi is absolutely correct,” said one. “No man should ever have the ability to dictate what goes on in women’s bodies. I’m so angry right now. My blood is boiling.”
“Bravo @whoopigoldberg. People act like abortion is easy as if women view it in the same way we do returning a pair of shoes. No one does,” another penned. “The people that are pro-birth are the same ones that send their daughters over state lines to get one. This would hurt POOR women.”
However, others branded the star ‘hypocritical,’ as she has previously voiced support over mandating the Covid-19 vaccination, with one saying: “Kind of a funny argument considering her support for mandatory vaccinations.”
“Oh, so my body my choice is back in play?” asked a second. “I thought that was thrown out with Covid.”
