Why are people setting their iPhone location to France?
Apple is well known for its groundbreaking announcements – such as Steve Jobs’ iconic introduction of the iPhone and, more recently, their own mixed reality headset called the Apple Vision Pro.
However, Apple has also been subject to some less favourable moments over the years, including the controversial iPhone 6 which would physically bend.
They also caught major flack after admitting that they deliberately slow down older phones.
However, now customers are taking their revenge on Apple – by setting their iPhone’s location to France…

The slowing down of older phones by Apple is also known as battery throttling.
Battery throttling slows down the performance of older iPhones is designed to stop them from shutting down without warning.
However, customers were not given the option to turn this feature off, nor were they made aware of Apple purposely slowing down their products.
A lawsuit was then filed against Apple by Justin Gutmann, a consumer rights campaigner, in 2022 – which could see the company paying over £700 million if they lose.
In a response to the allegations, Apple explained that older batteries are less capable of delivering the charge needed for the new systems – and therefore battery throttling was introduced.
The company wrote on their website: “Electronic components require a minimum voltage to properly operate.
“When the operations can no longer be supported with the full capabilities of the power management system, the system will perform a shutdown to preserve these electronic components. While this shutdown is intentional from the device perspective, it may be unexpected by the user.”

Despite Apple admitting to this, customers haven’t stopped looking for hacks to stop their old iPhones from slowing down – and one person on Reddit may have found a simple solution.

Posted in the subreddit r/technology, one person has shared that old iPhones become faster if you just change your location to France.
Following a report from GizChina, people believe that since the lawsuit is in France, Apple has intentionally stopped impacting the performance of old devices in the country.
So if you set your own old iPhone’s region to France, the slowing down will be disabled.
To do this, you need to open the Settings on your device and tap on your name.
You will then be asked to enter your password – or use your fingerprint – and from here you press Media & Purchase.
Once there, tap View Account and then Country/Region and then just select France.
It must be noted that newer phones – any that runs ios 11.2 and above – do have the option to turn off battery throttling so this advice is really for older devices.
