A ‘woke’ writer has reportedly suggested that the word ‘virginity’ be ‘rebranded’ with the term ‘sexual debut’ instead.

Cultural critic Nicolle Hodges, who writes sex-positive Dr Seussian books, said the original word is so ‘limiting’ and ‘rickety’ and it’s about time it was replaced with something modern and fresh.

She told the BBC: “We still have this old, rickety word that encapsulates what’s supposed to be an expansive time.”

The Toronto-based writer argued that the term ‘sexual debut’ makes more sense to use, as it means so much more.

“It’s not just replacing ‘virginity’ with a new term – it’s saying virginity is a concept that doesn’t exist because your sexual journey never ends,” Hodges explained.

The author came up with the phrase when writing a book, as she was discussing how sexuality can ‘bloom’.

After others read the term ‘sexual debut,’ it quickly caught on and some of Hodges’ fans told her she should launch a campaign for it to be officially used.

On Twitter, the writer penned: “Time to rebrand virginity to sexual debut so girls don’t begin their journey at a deficit, feeling like they have lost or given something up.

“We have few modern rites of passage, and the fact that this transition/discovery is shrouded in shame has to change.

“It is a celebration!”

Many people have taken to social media after hearing of the campaign to share their thoughts.

One person tweeted: “Stop calling it ‘losing my virginity’ and start calling it ‘making my sexual debut’.”

Another added: “‘I got to partake in their sexual debut’ sounds better than ‘I took their virginity’.”

However, some people argued that it sounded ‘over the top’.

Jokingly, one Twitter user said: “Sounds like it has to involve formal wear and an orchestra.”

“Don’t mean to be a hater but… the word ‘virginity’ is not hateful and does not only refer to girls. And calling it ‘sexual debut’ won’t help them feel less raped in those cases,” a fourth wrote.
