A woman has gone viral after claiming kids ‘don’t owe their parents anything’.

Lisa Pontius, from Charleston, Carolina, took to TikTok to respond to critics who said she should be ‘grateful’ for her mum’s help.

In the video, which has been viewed a whopping 4.2million times, she said: “Children don’t owe their parents a certain kind of relationship and depending on the parent, they might not owe them respect, either.

“It’s a parent’s job to provide for their children. It’s a responsibility.

“Not everyone rises to the occasion, but that’s like the bare minimum, taking care of your kid’s physical and financial needs. The level above that is their emotional needs, which good parents do, but all of that is not a contingent relationship.

“You’re not loving and providing for your children with the expectation they will blindly obey and do whatever you say as adults.”

Concluding her clip, Pontius said that children should be viewed as ‘people’ and they ‘don’t owe you s*** because you took care of them’.

Thousands of parents took to the comments to share their views on the matter.

One person said: “100% agree! From my experience older generations really struggle to understand this. They’ll maintain toxic relationships just because they’re ‘family’.”

Another added: “I had kids to be a mum. For me. My choice. They owe me NOTHING when they get older.”

However, not everyone agreed with the mum and argued it should be a given to treat your parents with automatic respect.

“The Fourth Commandment says to honour your father and mother. It does not list exceptions,” one viewer stated.

Sarcastically, a second commented: “Fair enough, I’m sure there’s unity in your family. If the day comes and your children decide to admit you into a hospice, remember this video.”
