The speculation began in April 2021 when Efron appeared in a video for Earth Day with Bill Nye.

Viewers quickly noticed that the 17 Again star’s jawline and cheeks seemed more pronounced and angular than usual.

Social media exploded with comments and theories, with many fans convinced the actor had undergone cosmetic surgery.

The hashtag #ZacEfron trended on X (formerly Twitter), and countless memes and side-by-side comparisons of his before-and-after photos flooded the internet.

The release of his new movie A Family Affair has reignited these rumors.

In the film, Efron portrays an obnoxious movie star, Chris Cole, who ends up dating his intern’s mom, played by Nicole Kidman.

Some viewers have found themselves distracted by Efron’s altered appearance and have been left with questions.

One person writes: “Zac Efron looks so different in A Family Affair.”

Another adds: “I am trying to watch A Family Affair and I’m finding it so hard. What on earth did Zac Efron do to his face?”

“It was the first time I had seen Zac Efron in maybe a decade and his appearance was so different it threw me off for the entire movie,” somebody else comments.

Efron has previously revealed the real reason behind his changing face.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Efron finally addressed the plastic surgery rumors and set the record straight.

He said the changes in his appearance are the result of a severe accident he suffered at home.

Referencing the plastic surgery rumors, he commented: “My mom told me. I don’t really read the internet, so, I don’t really give a f***.”

Chatting with Men’s Health, The Iron Claw star revealed that he slipped, hit the corner of a fountain, and severely injured his jaw.

Efron says his jaw now appears wider as the muscles in his face have to work harder to compensate.

He has undergone physical therapy to address this but temporarily stopped – this was amid recording the video for the Bill Nye special.

Efron told Men’s Health: “The masseters just grew. They just got really, really big.”

The masseter muscles are responsible for chewing and are located on both sides of the face, per the National Library of Medicine.

The actor says he doesn’t let the speculation bother him, adding: “If I valued what other people thought of me to the extent that they may think I do, I definitely wouldn’t be able to do this work.”
