A travel expert has revealed why you should always pick what most people deem to be the ‘worst seat’ on the plane, especially when it comes to long haul flights.

When it comes to flying, everyone has their own personal preferences. Some people like night flights, while others couldn’t think of anything worse.

Some people would always opt for booking the aisle, for quick access to the toilet and for the ability to stand up and stretch your legs, while others would rather lock in with the views of the window seat.

We’ll not even talk about the people who would rather save their pennies and take a gamble on not choosing a seat, ending up sitting at the other end of the plane to the people in their travel party.

And let’s face it, unless you have the budget to fly in business, or even first class, flying on a plane can be pretty uncomfortable, particularly if you’re on the taller side and feel like you have nowhere to put your legs.

Regardless of whether you’re team window or team aisle, statistics show that most people traveling by air would rather sit towards the front of the plane, for a number of different reasons.

For one, depending on the airline and the size of the aircraft, it might be that the front of the plane is the only way to get on and off, meaning you’re in for a long wait when disembarking at the end of a long flight. Meanwhile, some people are put off by the thought of being too close to the toilets.

Common complaints on flights

If you ask travelers if there’s anyone they would like to avoid sitting near on a flight, the unfortunate truth is that most would prefer to be seated away from small children.

That’s because, as we all know, young children aren’t supposed to be sat down for prolonged periods of time, so crying, seat kicking and generally making a lot of noise are pretty much a given for anyone under the age of five on a plane.

Meanwhile, other travelers will tell you they can’t think of anything worse than sitting next to big groups of people, who are flying out for boozy trips like bachelor or bachelorette parties, as these groups can often be quite rowdy and are likely to be drinking a lot on the flight.

Unfortunately, you can’t specify who you sit next to, but you can choose where your seat is on the plane, which certainly helps.

Traveler vows to always book the ‘worst’ seat

Despite the back row of the plane typically being the last place anyone would want to be seated, and widely considered the worst seats on the plane, one expert flyer has laid out some pretty convincing arguments about why it could actually be the best place to sit.

In fact, John Burfitt now goes out of his way to book the worst seat, which is the window seat on the back row of the plane, by the toilets. His decision was spurred on by a particularly bad experience which saw him being continuously kicked in the back by the passenger behind him.

After that, he vowed never to find himself in the same situation ever again. And it wasn’t until towards the end of the flight, when he walked to the back of the plane to use the toilet, that it dawned on him that the seats on the back row are up against a wall. Sure, you might be able to recline those seats, but it also means that no one will be able to kick your chair.

“In that instant, I decided the back row would be the only place I would sit on a long flight from now on,” he wrote in escape.com.au.

“Sure enough, on my next flight, I booked into the back row of the cabin and, even better, my seat was the one right next to the window. As I nestled into that corner, I discovered what true airline love is about. I had just found the best seat on the plane.”
