Internet Divided After Woman Refuses To Give Up Her Plane Seat For A Crying Child
A woman has split opinion after revealing the reasons she refused to give up her plane seat for a crying child.
When it comes to flying, no one wants to be sat near a crying child, but as a mom, let me assure you, no one finds that situation more stressful than the parent of said crying child. It’s not fun for anyone.
The incident in question dates back to December 2024, when then-29-year-old Brazillian woman Jeniffer Castro was flying from Rio de Janeiro to Belo Horizonte.
When she boarded the plane for the 50 minute flight, she discovered a young child was sitting in her seat. Instead of finding another available seat, she turned to cabin crew and asked for the child to be moved out of her pre-booked seat.
Fair game or unreasonable behaviour?
Well, according to one aggrieved passenger, who wasn’t actually the child’s mother or part of their travel group, didn’t agree with Jeniffer’s decision to ask the child to be moved.
The other passenger even went as far as getting their phone out and filming Jeniffer in an attempt to shame her for having the crying child removed from her seat.

After a clip of the incident started doing the rounds on social media, the internet was left divided over whether Jeniffer had done the right thing.
“I am a mom of a very demanding toddler, now turned into a preschool boy. She did absolutely right,” one mother wrote. “It is nice when you give things for a little one but no one is entitled.”
Another agreed: “As a mom, I would never feel so entitled to ask people to let go of their amenities to suit my child.”
“She did the right thing,” a third agreed. “When she has explicitly paid for the window why on earth did the toddler’s mother tell her to change the seat.”
Meanwhile, others took a slightly different view, with one commenting: “I get it, but sometimes you could just make a parent’s life easier by helping to keep the child happy.”
Some people suggested the flight attendant should’ve stepped in sooner to prevent such a back and forth between Jeniffer and the other passenger.
Jeniffer doubled down on her decision despite ‘losing career’
Since the incident went viral, the woman has spoken out about how the situation led to her losing her career working in a bank, after it was shared hundreds of thousands of times on social media.
“Since that incident, my life has taken a turn I could never have imagined,” she told MailOnline. “What should have been just an ordinary flight turned into an extremely embarrassing situation, exposing me unfairly and causing consequences that affected both my personal and professional life.”
She added: “I was the target of judgments, attacks and speculation from people who don’t even know the full story.”
Despite the outcome, Jeniffer has doubled down on her decision and vowed to do the same thing if she ever found herself in that situation again.
“I believe that we should respect people’s choices and decisions, especially when they are within their rights,” she said.
The former bank worker said she believes it is ‘essential’ for people to be told ‘no’ when requesting things from others so everyone can ‘understand that no one should be forced to justify something they simply don’t want to do’.
“We live in a society where ‘no’ is often seen as rude or selfish, but this needs to change,” she continued.
“Each person has their own reasons, preferences, and limits, and all of this must be respected without judgment.”
Jeniffer went on to file a lawsuit against the airline she was flying with at the time, seeking damages for emotional distress, reputational harm and a breach of privacy, stating the airline failed to protect her from public humiliation.
She also filed against the passenger who filmed her, but made it clear she was not taking any action against the family of the child.
