DJ Khaled’s co-writer August 08 has tragically died aged 31.

The singer and songwriter, whose real name is Ray Davon Jacobs, has credits on the chart-topping DJ Khaled hit ‘I’m The One’ which features Lil Wayne, Quavo, Chance The Rapper and Justin Bieber.

He also wrote Bieber’s smash song ‘Sorry’ and has collaborated with the likes of Jackson Wang, Ty Dolla $ign and Sabrina Claudio, among others.

Sadly, news has broken that August 08 has passed away.

Studio Def Jam disclosed the news to Variety, saying in a statement: “The entire Def Jam family mourns the tragic loss of Ray ‘August 08’ Jacobs.

“A brilliant songwriter, an accomplished musician and a singular artist, August will remain in our memory as a beloved colleague and friend. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones.”

Meanwhile 88Rising, the artist collective to which August 08 previously belonged, paid tribute to their former member on Instagram.

They pen: “It is with great sadness that we mourn the loss of Ray Jacobs, also known as AUGUST 08.

“RIP August the kindest and most talented genius you will be missed beyond words.

“Thank you for being an amazing mentor and a steadfast friend through all these years. We are forever grateful to you and the joy you brought in every room, through every song.

“Your energy, guidance and care gave so much inspiration and strength that will be carried on always.”

August 08’s sister has also shared a statement on social media – saying she is proud to have a brother who lives on through music.

“I find comfort in knowing that my brother lived a full life of abundance,” she adds.

“He was able to travel the world, and touch millions of people while fulfilling his soul purpose as a musician.”

August 08, who also adopted the name August Grant, signed to singer Jhené Aiko’s Allel Sound label in July of last year.

At around the same time, he released his last EP ‘Towards the Moon’ which included the Aiko-featuring single ‘Water Sign’ – featuring Aiko – and his collaboration with Joji ‘What We Used to Be’.

Fans of August 08 have taken to social media to pay tribute to the artist.

One person comments: “I give my deepest condolences, my love and my prayers.”

“This can’t be real. he was so talented,” adds a second.

Another fan writes: “Rip [to] one of the most underrated artists out there.”

Someone else pens: “This is shocking to be a moment ago listening to your music and seeing this RIP.”

A fifth fan says: “Rest easy. thank you for everything you’ve done for me and my friends.”
