I’m A Celebrity viewers have been left gobsmacked after finding out Boy George’s real name.

The English singer-songwriter was the lead singer in the pop band Culture Club – and created hit songs such as ‘Karma Chameleon’ and ‘Do You Really Want to Hurt Me’.

The icon made his debut on the ITV programme on November 6 after the show finally returned to Australia.

Discussing his appearance on the show, Boy George said: “I watch I’m A Celebrity every year and I had to think long and hard about this.

“I am bored of being iconic in the corner and if you want to compete in the world then being part of telly is part of that.”

Although many I’m A Celebrity viewers know who the star is, many are admitting they had no idea what Boy George’s real name was.

Many celebrities have eccentric stage names that are nothing like their real ones – such as Reginald Kenneth Dwight aka Elton John or Farrokh Bulsara aka Freddie Mercury.

But Boy George’s real name is literally George – or George Alan O’Dowd in full.

The subject of the eighties star’s name came up when Hollyoaks actor Owen Warner asked the musician what his name was.

After watching the show, one viewer tweeted: “Not me thinking Boy George’s name is Boy and not George.”

Another added: “Calling Boy George, just ‘George’ is so weird. His first name is obviously Boy #ImACeleb.”

While others have taken to the social media platform and said it was cringeworthy that Warner had no idea who Boy George was, let alone his real name.

“Owen Warner asking what Boy George’s name is, is the equivalent of the Love Island boys not recognising Gemma Owen’s last name,” one joked.

While a second said: “I can’t believe he had to ask for Boy George’s name!”

In 2014, Boy George was interviewed by The Hollywood Reporter, and he told the outlet why he doesn’t go by his real name.

He explained: “I didn’t want to confuse people by becoming The Artist Formerly Known as. Boy George is a brand that I created and is familiar to people.

“Heaven knows they’ve had enough confusion. I’m not deluded. I know I’m an older man, but I’m a boy at heart.

“Life is about learning to be yourself, and I think I’ve gone in this interesting full circle. In spirit, I’m very much back to the person I was when I first started my career.”

Although the I’m A Celebrity series has barely started, there’s already been plenty of discussion surrounding the show, especially as Love Island star Olivia Attwood has already left.

The 31-year-old, who was voted the Jungle VIP, was apparently forced to leave on medical grounds, reports The Sun.

An insider told the news outlet: “Olivia was involved in a medical drama overnight.

“She really wanted to go back into the camp but medics won’t let her.”
