Smallville actress Allison Mack has shared the moment which led to her joining notorious cult NXIVM, eventually becoming ‘grand master’ in the underground operation.

Mack, who is best known for playing Chloe Sullivan in the superhero series, was arrested in April 2018, on suspicion of s*x trafficking, s*x trafficking conspiracy and forced labour, for her role in the slave and master-style cult.

A year later, after engaging in plea negotiations, the actress pleaded guilty to racketeering, racketeering conspiracy, extortion and forced labour, and in 2021, she was sentenced to three years behind bars, three years of probation, 1,000 hours of community service and a $20,000 fine.

Sick practices of NXIVM cult

NXIVM, which is pronounced like nexium, was a criminal organisation disguised as a self-help group, founded by Keith Raniere in 1998.

Based in New York Capital District, the illegal sect used a multi-level marketing pyramid scheme to lure in members, offering self-help programs promising to help people overcome fears and limiting beliefs, while becoming more successful in business and relationships.

It also promised to increase confidence and discipline, encouraging members to level up to become coaches or recruiters, with many participants spending large amounts of money on additioal courses.

In reality, the cult was operating on a number of sick practices, forcing members to confess vulnerabilities and secrets, to earn their loyalty, with many young women forced to sleep with Raniere, who would brand his initials on them as a sign of ownership. These women were then treated as slaves and were forced to follow the orders of the masters.

The cult is reported to have used methods like sleep deprivation, social isolation from family and friends, and intensive workshops to break down members’ resistance.

NXIVM’s leader, Raniere, was eventually sentenced to 120 years in prison in 2021, for a long list of charges, including s*x trafficking, forced labour and racketeering.

Allison Mack’s role in the cult

The 43-year-old is said to have become one of Raniere’s closest and most trusted members, working her way up to the position of ‘master’ in a sub-group known as DOS.

In DOS, Mack would recruit women into the group, before collecting ‘collateral’ from them, such as nude photos or financial material, to ensure obedience, before pressuring them into labour and s*xual situations.

Speaking on a podcast series called Allison After NXIVM, the actress admitted she was ‘abusive,’ but was ‘excited by the power that I felt having these young, beautiful women look to me and listen to me.’

She told how Raniere convinced her that being ‘physically intimate with him,’ would help her in healing from childhood s*xual exploitation she was subjected to, and included herself in the women who were ‘brainwashed’ by him.

Mack used her fame as an actor as a ‘power tool’ to get people to do what she wanted, and has confessed her own role in victimising women, being ’emotionally aggressive’ to them.

Speaking of her role, which meant being the ‘go between’ for Raniere and the women he was exploiting, she said: “It was my job to relay what to do with him for her growth. The more she said, ‘I’m scared, I don’t want to do it,’ the more I would say, ‘You need to do it, and the longer you wait, the more consequences there will be.’

“The coercion started, and the pressure and the pressure and the pressure… And then it was, like, rape.”

The moment Allison Mack was convinced to join cult

Mack has spoken candidly about how she came to be involved in NXIVM, first showing an interest after her Smallville co-star Kristin Kreuk invited her to attend some self-help seminars.

On her podcast series, she mentioned her experience as a child actor, and how that led to her ‘creating a hierarchy’ of people in every room she walked into.

After attending a week-long course with the organisation, she was invited to Albany to meet Raniere, which she did, meeting him at a late night volleyball game.

When they met, the s*xual offender asked her if she had any questions for him. She told him she hadn’t prepared any and just thought she’d ‘come and smile and cheer them on and it would be okay.’ Raniere responded by asking her: “Is that how you do life?”

Admitting she was entranced by him, Mack recalled how she turned her car around at 3am one night after realising the question she wanted to ask him was, ‘what is art?’

After several months of taking part in courses, she moved to Albany to live with Raniere, which is when things started to become a lot more intense.
