Authorities Issue Major Update After Britney Spears Arrested
Police have revealed more details on the arrest of the pop-star Britney Spears.
The singer rose to stardom at the age of 16 when her debut single, Baby One More Time, topped the global pop charts.
Since then, Britney Spears’ personal struggles have been constantly thrust into the public view, and her behaviour has faced consistent judgement from the world.
But, on Wednesday, the 44-year-old’s erratic behaviour has led to an arrest in California.
Previous personal struggles
2007 was the year that her personal life seemed to collapse. It was on the front page of nearly every tabloid in the country.
After divorcing the dancer, Kevin Federline, she lost custody of their two children and suffered a distressing breakdown.
Fans became concerned as they witnessed the then 25-year-old display unstable behaviour, shaving her head and attacking a photographer’s car with an umbrella.
In 2008, she was admitted to hospital twice and put under a temporary psychiatric lockdown. One of these cases happened after she allegedly refused to hand her young son over to her ex-husband in a stand-off involving police.
The Toxic singer has two sons with Federline – now 20-year-old Sean Preston and 19-year-old Jayden James. They both live with their father in Hawaii.
Her family issues appeared to have a catastrophic effect on her mental health, which likely wasn’t helped by the widespread media coverage.

The Conservatorship
Following her public breakdown in 2007-8, the pop icon was put under a conservatorship, which was primarily controlled by her father, Jamie Spears.
Conservatorships are granted by the court for people who are unable to make their own decisions, for example those with dementia or mental illnesses.
Britney’s was split into two parts: one for her financial affairs and estate, and the other for her as a person.
This gave her father power over her finances and career decisions. He even decided when she could visit her sons and whether she could get remarried.
In court, the singer emphasised her frustration, claiming that Jamie Spears stopped her from having her birth control removed. She said, “I want to be able to get married and have a baby. I was told right now in the conservatorship I am not able to get married and have a baby.”
Britney also reported that she was forced to go on tour and take medication she didn’t want.
A New York Times documentary alleged that her father had even got his security staff to bug her phone and bedroom.

Despite Jamie Spears saying he loved his daughter ‘unconditionally’ and he “tried to do what is in her best interests”, court documents also revealed his salary as conservator was about $16,000 per month, plus money from deals signed for by his daughter.
Whereas Britney was given an allowance of $2,000 per week.
Fans are concerned over her welfare
In November 2021, the singer was finally liberated from her conservatorship, after 13 years of control.
This came after years of battling, including a #FreeBritney campaign run by fans.
While many celebrated her freedom, the popstar seemed to continue spiralling.
She took to social media, posting flurries of unhinged dancing videos, which drew many concerned fans to comment.
“Her eyes are so sad,” one user said. Another echoed the worried tone, commenting, “The conservatorship is what made her this way. Cage a human being and force medication on them and this is the result.”
“Somebody seriously needs to help her. This will end so badly,” another said.

Four years after her liberation, the singer put a harrowing post on Instagram in 2025, where she wrote, “I’m incredibly lucky to even be alive with how my family treated me once in my life and now I’m scared of them.”
In one of her last posts on the app, her troubling caption read: “I do feel like my wings were taken away and brain damage happened to me a long time ago 100 percent.”
She deleted her Instagram account soon after.
This isn’t her first driving offence
Only last month, Spears appeared to break the law when she was photographed on the phone while behind the wheel. This is illegal under California’s ‘No Touch’ law, however she was not charged.
Before this incident, she was also recently spotted driving after a night out and was filmed on a highway swerving into the wrong lane. Some feared her re-lapse of erratic behaviour was in response to the release of her ex-husband’s memoir.
Back in 2007, as their marriage ended, the Gimme More singer was also involved in a hit-and-run after crashing into a parked car. This was also dismissed after Spears reportedly paid the owner an undisclosed sum.

Why was Spears’ arrested?
The 44-year-old was pulled over and arrested on Wednesday after being involved in a police chase.
She was reported as driving dangerously on the Highway in Ventura Country around 8pm.
The chaos of the hour-long chase was heard in the 911 call, where one dispatcher can be heard saying: “A black sedan, erratic braking, swerving and driving with no tail light.”
Officers identified the vehicle as a ‘2026 black BMW convertible.’
A Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) was then brought to the scene to assess where the driver was under the influence.
An unknown substance was found in Spears’ car, according to a source.
The singer was then taken into custody at 9.30pm by California Highway Patrol.
Since the arrest, a representative for Britney told the Daily Mail: “This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable. Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law, and hopefully this can be the first step in the long-overdue changes that need to occur in her life.”
“Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time.”
Ventura County Sheriff records have reported that Spears has since been released and is due to appear in court on Monday, May 4.
