A photo of Meghan Trainor’s newborn baby has sparked outrage online – and it may be one of the most heated debates we’ve seen so far.

Now, who would have guessed that a celebrity baby announcement would get the internet up in arms? I mean, it was bound to happen, wasn’t it? And the latest star to take center stage is none other than viral pop star, Meghan Trainor.

The 32-year-old has seemingly found herself in the center of multiple controversies over the past few months, including the infamous ‘toxic’ mom group chat (big yikes).

Still, there’s one particular argument she can’t shake off, and ironically enough, it all stems back to her debut single.

Back in 2014, Trainor dropped her most popular track, ‘All About That Bass,’ which gave her the breakthrough she was looking for.

Popular radio stations picked up the catchy beat and started spreading it to the masses, which eventually led her to reach the number one spot on the US Billboard Hot 100.

At the time, she didn’t just release a hit song; she also sparked a global conversation about body positivity and staying true to your authentic self, which unfortunately, has come to bite her in the backside just over a decade later.

Trainor undergoes dramatic transformation

Over the past few years, the singer has adopted a slightly new image, thanks to a few popular cosmetic procedures, including a breast augmentation and lift, which she discussed in more detail in an interview with USA Today.

“I got to a place where I hated what was on my chest,” she told the outlet, stating that the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as two pregnancies and C-sections, had her feeling self-conscious about her body.

“It was tough to look at my body,” she continued. “I’m always singing about loving myself, and it got harder and harder with all the scars and stretch marks. And then after losing weight, too, these boobs were just purely empty, just flat and just felt like skin on my body.”

After trying other non-surgical methods to alter their appearance, she finally decided to ‘do something about [it]’ and opted to get plastic surgery.

To follow through with her ‘dream,’ the star decided to consult Dr. Payman Danielpour, a California-based cosmetic surgeon, who recommended the newly FDA-approved Motiva SmoothSilk Ergonomix 290 Mini implants.

His goal was to make any alterations as undetectable as possible.

“We’ve wanted to do surgery to keep people guessing,” he explained in the interview.

“There’s a fine line [between] completely changing the way you look versus just doing something for yourself that may either restore things that have changed over the years or help you gain some of the confidence you didn’t have because you were born a certain way.”

However, the internet wasn’t as forgiving, especially given the fact that Trainor had also admitted that she underwent a weight loss journey assisted by the GLP-1 medication Mounjaro.

Many had felt as though Trainor ‘betrayed’ what she stood for as a body-positivity advocate, with some even going as far as branding her a ‘hypocrite.’

But what’s this got to do with her recent post about her newborn?

Well, people couldn’t help but question what the 32-year-old’s true motive was after she revealed she and her husband, Daryl Sabara, welcomed their third child via surrogacy.

Taking to Instagram on January 20, Trainor posted a carousel of seven photos of the family alongside an emotional caption.

“Our baby girl Mikey Moon Trainor has finally made it to the world thanks to our incredible, superwoman surrogate,” the singer wrote. “We are forever grateful to all the doctors, nurses, teams who made this dream possible.

“We had endless conversations with our doctors in this journey and this was the safest way for us to be able to continue growing our family,” she continued, also adding: “ We are over the moon in love with this precious girl. Riley and Barry have been so excited, they even got to choose her middle name. We are going to enjoy our family time now, love you all.”

Trainor reveals why she welcomed daughter via surrogate

Speaking to People in the aftermath of the announcement, Trainor opened up about the family’s decision to go with a surrogate for their third child.

“I want people to know that surrogacy is just another beautiful way to build a family. It’s not something to whisper about or judge. It’s rooted in trust, science, love, and teamwork,” Trainor explained. “Every family’s journey looks different, and all of them are extremely valid.”

Trainor also added that she had ‘an incredible’ experience working with the surrogate, whose identity remains a mystery.

“Our surrogate is one of the most selfless, strong and loving people I’ve ever met. We felt so connected throughout the entire journey, and I’ll always be grateful for the care and love she showed our daughter,” Trainor said.

“She gave us the greatest gift of our lives. She graciously answered our many check-in texts to make sure she was doing okay.”

Why Trainor is facing backlash

Fans took to the comments to slam the star for an array of reasons.

“Why is she in the hospital bed acting like she gave birth lmaoooo,” wrote one user, while another commented: “Poor baby and mom. This is so dystopian and unnatural.”

“Whilst I’m happy for every child coming into a loving and caring family, I’m worried about the normalisation of surrogacy. To reproduce is not a human right. We’re seeing this being a thing in Hollywood and show business. Which is showing dangerous developments in at least two ways. [Number 1] exploitation of women’s bodies (the surrogates) [and number two] women choosing not to reproduce because they’re dependent on their bodies for income and their body staying, and not straying from, a certain standard…” a third also stated.

Somebody else added: “This is disgusting.”

However, others jumped in to defend the singer.

“Some people are so hateful. No one needs to give their reasoning for using a surrogate. They wanted to expand their biological family and had the means to,” a user commented.

“What a beautiful, magical family you and your husband have created. God has blessed you both,” said another person.

Alongside Mikey Moon, Trainor and Sabara have two other children, Riley, 4, and Barry, 2.

Since the initial backlash, Trainor has addressed the controversy more directly, revealing that the reaction took a significant emotional toll.

Speaking in April 2026, per The News, she admitted the criticism left her in ‘a cloud of tears every night,’ as she worried about how the negativity might affect her daughter.

The singer also clarified that choosing surrogacy was not taken lightly, explaining it followed serious health concerns and medical advice, with doctors recommending it as the safest option for her and her family.

Despite the online criticism, Trainor has stood by her decision, continuing to describe surrogacy as a valid and deeply personal way to grow a family, while urging people to be more understanding of different paths to parenthood.
