Michael Jordan’s representative has spoken out after the NBA star was called out for ‘inappropriate’ behaviour at the Daytona 500.

The 63-year-old celebrated his first Daytona 500 win on Sunday (February 15), after purchasing the team, 23XI Racing, in 2021 with Denny Hamlin.

Driver Tyler Reddick won ‘The Great American Race’ over the weekend, with a frantic last lap at the Daytona International Speedway, securing Jordan the historic first win.

Speaking about the success, driver Reddick said: “It’s stuff you dream of as a kid.

“Now, I definitely didn’t look into the future and know that I would drive for Michael Jordan. But to be able to have someone like Michael Jordan believe in me enough, someone like Denny Hamlin.

“I’m just trying to do my best to live on the promises that I made to them and vice versa.”

Jordan celebrated the historic win

“I can’t even believe it, it was so gratifying,” Jordan said in a post-victory interview.

“You never know how these races are going to end. You just try to survive.

“We hung in there all day. Great strategy by the team, and we gave ourselves a chance at the end. Look, I’m ecstatic.”

Prior to entering the fast-paced world of NASCAR, it’s safe to say that Jordan redefined basketball greatness.

He combined unmatched competitiveness with six NBA championships and five MVP awards during his career.

His impact extended beyond the court, turning the NBA into a global phenomenon and building a brand with Nike’s Air Jordan line, which has stood the test of time.

What’s for sure, is that his legacy remains the gold standard for excellence in the sport.

NBA star called out over ‘inappropriate behaviour’

Hundreds of users online have called the star out for his behaviour during the celebration, in which he allegedly touched a young boy’s legs and bottom, while tugging at his T-shirt.

And it seems Jordan is desperate to move on from the controversy.

One user prompted the backlash after posting: “Interesting celebration choice by Michael Jordan after winning the Daytona 500.”

“After the week we just had…this is NOT a good look,” another added.

A third questioned: “Yo what did I just witness.”

As another wrote: “Straight to jail.”

“MJ ruined his entire legacy in only 23 seconds,” a fifth added.

But others were quick to defend the former basketball player, noting that he was ‘helping’ the boy, who happened to be Reddick’s son, after he got soaked with champagne during the celebration.

One explained: “Everyone got doused in champagne. The boy said he was itchy, and Michael Jordan was helping the poor kid out.

“He’s pulling the shirt away and then he scratches the boy’s leg. I know that the Epstein files are out and people are on edge, but this ain’t it, folks. Grow up.”

And it’s safe to say that the controversy shifted attention away from what was otherwise a landmark achievement for the organization.

Michael Jordan’s rep breaks silence about viral clip

It took some days before Jordan broke his silence on the controversy, but a source has now spoken out on his behalf.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, Jordan’s reps defended the star, stating that his behaviour was ‘innocent and playful.’

The source said: ‘Look, it’s not the most ideal situation for Michael to be in but everyone on the team is looking at it as a playful gesture and nothing more nefarious.

“Tyler [the driver and child’s father] doesn’t have any issue with it and everyone hopes it just goes away and can be looked upon as nothing more than innocent and playful.”

Their statement concluded: “Michael will not be making a habit of doing this in future after all the furor.

“He hopes everyone can celebrate the big win and not try to turn this incident into something more than it needs to be.”
