Patrick Muldoon Shared Haunting Final Post Before His Death
Patrick Muldoon shared a haunting final Instagram post before his tragic death aged 57.
On the surface, it was exactly the kind of post an excited actor makes when things are going well.
Just two days later, Patrick Muldoon was dead. He was 57 years old.
A career that spanned decades
To understand the weight of this loss, it helps to understand what Patrick Muldoon meant to a generation of television viewers.
Born in San Pedro, California, he broke through in 1992 when he was cast as Austin Reed on NBC’s long-running soap opera Days of Our Lives — a role that quickly made him a fan favourite and kept him on screen until 1995.
He would later return to reprise the character in 2011, underlining the affection that had never really faded.
From daytime soap opera, he made the leap to primetime, joining the cast of Melrose Place as Richard Hart — a darker, more volatile character that allowed him to demonstrate a different kind of range.
The move signalled that Muldoon was more than a handsome face from daytime television; he was a genuinely versatile performer capable of carrying complex material.
His big screen credentials were cemented in 1997 with Starship Troopers, Paul Verhoeven’s satirical sci-fi blockbuster in which he played Zander Barcalow, the romantic rival to Casper Van Dien’s lead character.
The film received a mixed initial reception but has since achieved genuine cult status — and Muldoon’s presence in it has been a touchstone for fans of that era of science fiction cinema ever since.
Away from acting, he pursued music as a serious passion, serving as lead vocalist for his band The Sleeping Masses. Those who knew him well described a man whose creativity was not contained by any single medium — someone equally engaged whether he was on a film set, in a recording studio, or working behind the scenes.
His personal life also attracted attention over the years, particularly his past relationship with actress Denise Richards — a romance that predated her marriage to Charlie Sheen.
What distinguished that story, ultimately, was not its beginning but its aftermath: Muldoon and Richards maintained a genuine, lasting friendship.
She later spoke openly about how she had been discouraged from maintaining contact with him during her marriage, and about how the two had eventually reconnected.
In recent years they had collaborated professionally, appearing together in a music video — the kind of reunion that spoke to a bond that had simply outlasted the circumstances that once complicated it.

The tributes that followed Patrick Muldoon’s death
The announcement of his death, confirmed on Monday April 20, prompted an immediate and heartfelt outpouring from those who had known and worked with him across the decades.
Actor Jake Getman, who had appeared alongside Muldoon as a child, captured the reaction of many. “RIP Patrick Muldoon,” he wrote. “Worked with him when I was 8… a great guy and always kept the energy light.”
Others spoke of his warmth, his humor, and the particular quality he had of making people around him feel good — a generosity of spirit that those who encountered him, whether on set or off, consistently remarked upon.
Friends described him as a mentor, a collaborator, and a constant source of good energy in any room he entered.
He is survived by his partner, Miriam Rothbart, as well as his parents, sister, brother-in-law, and extended family.
His death, confirmed by People magazine as the result of a heart attack suffered on Sunday April 19, came with no publicly known warning signs and no indication that anything was amiss.
What remains is that final Instagram post — a man in full, excited about what was coming next, sharing his joy with the world. It is the kind of last message that, in its absolute ordinariness, says everything about the life that surrounded it.

The haunting final post
A new project with a major cast. A director with serious credentials. Filming already underway in Australia. The caption radiated enthusiasm and forward momentum — the energy of someone with plenty still to look forward to.
On Friday April 18, just two days before his death, Muldoon shared a post on Instagram that was entirely characteristic of someone at the top of their game and looking ahead with excitement.
He posted a promotional image for the upcoming film Kockroach, a project directed by Matt Ross and featuring a remarkable ensemble cast including Chris Hemsworth, Taron Egerton, Zazie Beetz, and Alec Baldwin, currently filming in Australia.
His caption made his feelings clear: “So excited to be a part of this amazing project KOCKROACH directed by Matt Ross starring Chris Hemsworth, Taron Egerton, Zazie Beetz and Alec Baldwin. Filming now in Australia.”
It was a post full of energy and anticipation. There was no hint of anything wrong — no indication of ill health, no suggestion that the excitement he was expressing was anything other than genuine. By every outward measure, it was the message of a man with his best work still ahead of him.
Two days later, he suffered a heart attack. He did not survive it.
