Steve Harwell sadly died earlier this week and now his manager has disclosed his apparent cause of death.

Harwell was an American musician who was best known as the lead vocalist and frontman of the band Smash Mouth.

Along with the group, he was best known for the track ‘All Star’ – which was featured in the animated movie Shrek.

Smash Mouth’s band manager, Robert Hayes, confirmed the saddening news to Rolling Stone in a statement.

The musician reportedly died at his home in Boise, Idaho, while ‘surrounded by family and friends’.

It read: “Steve has been retired from Smash Mouth for two years now, and the band continues to tour with new vocalist Zach Goode.

“That said, Steve’s legacy will live on through the music. With Steve, Smash Mouth has sold over 10 Million albums worldwide and topped the charts with two #1 hit singles, five Top 40 singles, three Hot 100 singles, four Billboard 200 albums and a Grammy nomination not to mention the hundreds of film and television placements and of course those musical features in Shrek.”

Hayes has now disclosed to NBC News that Harwell died from acute liver failure.

The manager tells the outlet: “Steve Harwell was a true American Original. A larger-than-life character who shot up into the sky like a Roman candle.”

According to Mayo Clinic, acute liver failure is the loss of liver function which occurs quickly – in days or weeks. It is less common than chronic liver failure, which occurs more slowly.

Acute liver failure can cause severe complications, such as bleeding and increased pressure on the brain.

Although it can sometimes be reversed with treatment, in many situations it requires a liver transplant.
