While the actor has found huge success and has legions of fans, his personal life is often scrutinised – particularly regarding his relationship with his daughter.
But first, let’s start at the beginning…
Cruise reportedly began dating fellow actress Katie Holmes in 2005; the following year, they welcomed Suri and tied the knot.
Suri’s birth was a highly publicised event thanks to her famous parents.
Cruise and Holme’s whirlwind romance, high-profile status and association with Scientology would result in the youngster often being in the public eye.
Suri became a mini fashion icon as a toddler, stirring controversy with her baby heels and designer outfits.
But in 2012, her parents’ relationship ended when Holmes filed for divorce.
Since then, Suri has remained out of the public eye.
So, what exactly is Suri up to these days?
The now 18-year-old has reportedly showcased a talent for singing, contributing her vocals to two of her mother’s film soundtracks.
At 16, she performed ‘Blue Moon’ for the 2022 film Alone Together and recorded work for Holmes’ recent project, Rare Objects, per IMDb.
Holmes has expressed delight at including Suri in her work, sharing with Glamour: “I hope she always does something in my films. I always ask her. Both experiences came from a love for our industry, where projects create a family-like bond. Including her is meaningful because she’s my heart.”
Suri is ‘leaning towards’ studying fashion in college, according to the Daily Mail. While she’s applying to schools nationwide, it’s reported that Holmes wants her to stay close to home in New York City.
Elsewhere in her interview with Glamour, Holmes emphasised her protective nature over Suri: “What has been really important for me with my daughter, because she was so visible at a young age, is I really like to protect her.
“I’m very grateful to be a parent, to be her parent. She’s an incredible person.”
While it appears Suri has a close relationship with her mother, the same can’t be said for her father.
A source tells Page Six that Cruise hasn’t seen his daughter in a very long time and is not a part of her life.
It is rumoured that Cruise’s commitment to Scientology prevents him from seeing Suri.
Scientology is a set of beliefs and practices invented by American author L. Ron Hubbard and it’s become a global church.
The core belief is that a human is an immortal, spiritual being that is just resident in a physical body.
Holmes’ departure from the faith is said to be a significant factor in their divorce.
While the Dawson’s Creek star was a follower of the religion, she chose to leave around the same time her marriage to Cruise ended, reports the Mirror.
Former Scientologist Leah Remini, best known for starring in The King of Queens, alleges to the New York Post that Holmes is considered an ‘enemy’ of the Church of Scientology.
She claims: “Scientology considers Katie a suppressive person which is an enemy and therefore Tom believes, like all Scientologists, that he can’t be connected to Suri.
“I’m sure his master plan is to wait until Suri gets older so that he can lure her into Scientology and away from her mother.”
It’s previously been reported by TMZ that Cruise was required to pay $400,000 annually in child support until Suri turned 18.
Now that Suri is an adult, she has the freedom to decide whether she wants to proceed with a relationship with her father and her upbringing within the Church of Scientology.
In the meantime, it’s been reported that the 18-year-old has changed her name – and it turns out, there’s a significant and sad reason behind it.
The teenager made a subtle yet impactful statement about her identity during a performance of Head Over Heels in New York.
Supported by her mum and grandparents, Suri played the role of Philoclea in the stage show.
Notably, the casting sheet disclosed that she isn’t going by her birth name, Suri Cruise. Hello! reports that she has adopted her mother’s middle name and is listed as Suri Noelle.
Suri appears to have distanced herself from her father’s surname.
Her birth certificate names her simply as Suri Cruise, per TMZ.
