There’s an important reason why Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds weren’t invited to Taylor Swift‘s wedding to Travis Kelce.
Lively and Reynolds were once two of the most familiar faces in Swift’s inner circle.
For years, the couple appeared to be among the singer’s closest celebrity friends, regularly attending events with her, cheering alongside her at football games and even becoming part of her music world.
Swift has famously referenced the couple’s children in her songs, and previously revealed she is godmother to their kids.
So when Swift married Travis Kelce in one of the most star-studded celebrity weddings of the year, many fans expected Lively and Reynolds to be there.
Instead, they were nowhere to be seen.
According to multiple reports, the absence was not simply a scheduling issue.
Taylor and Travis tied the knot in New York
Swift and Kelce married on July 3 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, per the BBC.
The highly guarded ceremony brought together names from music, Hollywood and sport, with Adam Sandler officiating the wedding.
The couple wore custom Dior looks, while the venue was transformed into an elaborate garden-style setting.
The guest list reportedly included major stars such as Gigi Hadid, Bradley Cooper, Selena Gomez, Ed Sheeran, Dakota Johnson, Hugh Grant, Gracie Abrams, Kelsea Ballerini and several figures from the NFL world.
Swift’s brother, Austin Swift, served as her man of honour, while Kelce’s brother, Jason Kelce, was his best man.
But amid the huge celebrity turnout, one absence stood out.
Lively and Reynolds did not attend the rehearsal dinner or the wedding.
People reported that the couple were instead seen in Lake Placid, New York, where their daughter Betty was taking part in a horse show.
Their friendship had already been under strain
Swift and Lively first became friends around 2015, and their bond eventually became one of the most recognizable friendships in celebrity culture.
They were photographed at dinners, parties and public events, while Lively and Reynolds were often seen supporting Swift during major moments in her career.
Their daughters’ names, James, Inez and Betty, were famously included in Swift’s music, most notably across her Folklore era.
Swift later confirmed publicly that she was godmother to Lively and Reynolds’ children.
For a long time, the friendship seemed unusually close.
But reports of tension began after Swift’s name was pulled into Lively’s legal battle with It Ends With Us co-star and director Justin Baldoni, per Page Six.
That dispute began after Lively sued Baldoni, accusing him of sexual harassment and alleging a campaign to damage her reputation.
Baldoni denied wrongdoing and filed a countersuit against Lively, Reynolds and others, though his lawsuit was later dismissed.
During the legal fight, Swift’s name appeared in court filings, private text messages were exposed, and she was even subpoenaed before the subpoena was dropped.

The legal battle appears to have been the major turning point.
In court documents, Baldoni’s team referenced messages involving Lively, Reynolds and Swift.
One widely reported text allegedly showed Lively referring to Swift and Reynolds as her “dragons” and “most trusted partners.”
The implication, according to reports, was that Swift had been used as part of Lively’s support system during creative disputes around It Ends With Us.
Swift’s representative later pushed back strongly, saying the singer had no meaningful involvement in the film beyond allowing her song My Tears Ricochet to be used.
Her team said she had not been involved in casting, editing, scoring or creative decisions and had not even seen the movie until after its release.
The statement also criticized the subpoena attempt as a way of using Swift’s name to generate public attention.
Although the subpoena was eventually dropped, the damage to the friendship had reportedly already been done.
Private texts made things worse
In January 2026, additional private messages between Swift and Lively were unsealed in court documents.
The Independent reported that the messages appeared to show tension between the pair months before Lively filed her lawsuit.
In one exchange, Lively reportedly checked in with Swift and admitted she felt like a ‘bad friend’ because she had spent months talking about her own problems.
Swift’s reported reply suggested she had felt some distance growing between them.
She allegedly wrote that she missed her ‘funny, dark, normal-speaking friend’ and felt as though recent messages from Lively sounded more like ‘a mass corporate email’ than the way they used to speak.
The messages appeared emotional rather than explosive, but they made the private strain between the women public.

According to the insider, there was not necessarily one single incident that ended the friendship.
Instead, it was reportedly the accumulation of everything that happened during the legal drama.
The source claimed Swift had initially believed she and Lively might eventually move past the tension, but things became harder to repair as more details surfaced publicly.
By the time Swift was choosing who she wanted at one of the most important events of her life, she reportedly decided she did not want that energy around her wedding.
People also reported that Lively and Swift were not speaking, after sources previously said the two were taking space from each other.
Ryan Reynolds was absent too
Reynolds’ absence was also notable because he had often been part of the same friendship circle, People reports.
He attended games and events with Swift and Lively, and he was frequently seen as part of the wider group surrounding the singer during her early relationship with Kelce.
But because Reynolds was also named in Baldoni’s countersuit and appeared in the broader legal dispute, his absence was unsurprising.
The couple spent the wedding period away from New York City, with their daughter’s horse show offering a clear explanation for where they were instead.
Still, given their history with Swift, fans immediately focused on what their absence meant.
The wedding became a clear sign the friendship had changed
For many fans, the wedding guest list confirmed what had been rumored for months.
Lively was not at Swift’s bachelorette activities in June, and she was not seen with the singer publicly throughout the year.
