Dog owners could ‘face a whopping £2,000 fine’ for making a simple error, it has been revealed.

The Control of Dogs order 1992 requires that our four-legged friends have a collar and tag when out in public so that they can be identified – regardless of whether they’re microchipped.

It can be written on the collar itself or, alternatively, it can be a tag attached to it.

A harness is not an exception to this rule and could ‘result in a £5,000 fine’ and ‘a maximum penalty of up to six months imprisonment and/or an unlimited fine’.

The Blue Cross states: “Even if your dog is microchipped, they still need to wear a collar or tag. Exemptions apply for some working dogs.

“It’s up to you whether or not you put your telephone number on the collar or tag as well, but we recommend you add your mobile number so you can be contacted at any time in case your dog goes missing.”

The organisation went on to warn breeders that before sending puppies off to their new homes, they need to be microchipped. Otherwise, they’re breaking the law.

As they’re the pup’s first registered keeper, they should pass on this paperwork to the animal’s new owner.

The Microchipping of Dogs Regulations 2015 states that all furry friends over the age of eight weeks must be microchipped.

Dog owners could ‘face a £500 fine or even criminal prosecution’ if their pet isn’t chipped and registered under an approved database.

However, there are exemptions to these regulations. Under certain circumstances, exceptions will be made for dogs who have health issues.

In these situations, the dog’s owner would still need a certificate clarifying the exemption.
