The Doomsday Clock is now closer than it’s ever been to armageddon.
The clock marks how close our planet is to complete annihilation as a result of man-made actions.
It started 76 years ago in 1947 to warn humanity of the dangers of nuclear war.
For two years, the clock has remained at 100 seconds to midnight – or the end of the world – but now, we’ve moved closer than ever before.

The hands of the clock move closer to or further away from midnight based on the scientists’ reading of existential threats at a particular time.
Scientists say when the clock hits 12 – or midnight – the world will end.
A group of scientists and experts maintain the clock at The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists.
The committee includes experts in international relations and scientists who study nuclear weapons, climate change, and disease.
Rachel Bronson, president of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, has explained why the clock has moved closer to disaster.
“In February 2022, weeks after our [last] announcement, our fears were born out,” Bronson says.
“Russia’s thinly veiled threats to use nuclear weapons remind the world that escalation of the conflict by accident, intention, or miscalculation is a terrible risk.
“The possibilities that the conflict could spin out of anyone’s control remains high.”
The committee has now set the clock at 90 seconds to midnight.
According to Bronson, the decision to move the clock forward 10 seconds was ‘largely, but not exclusively, because of the mounting dangers of the war in Ukraine’.
Since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, tensions between Russia and NATO have been extremely high.
Other threats cited by the report this year include climate change, biological threats, and disruptive technologies.
The statement adds: “The war’s effects are not limited to an increase in nuclear danger; they also undermine global efforts to combat climate change.”
Countries that rely on Russian oil and gas have now started to look for other natural gas suppliers.
It’s also said that world leaders will need to continue to identify and address biological risks – whether the origin is natural, accidental or intentional.

The board also said that a pandemic is no longer a once-in-a-lifetime risk.
In 2020, the clock hands were moved 100 seconds closer to midnight. In 2021 and 2022, they stayed in the same position.
The hands of the Doomsday Clock were farthest from midnight at the end of the Cold War – 17 minutes away.
Bronson says humans are largely responsible for global problems but that people can work together to reduce the risks.
