The documentary has also quickly climbed Netflix’s rankings, becoming the platform’s number one film shortly after release, introducing the extraordinary case to an entirely new audience.
The unbelievable true story behind the documentary
The film explores the real-life case involving Michelle Hadley, a California woman who was arrested in 2016 after police accused her of carrying out an elaborate stalking campaign against her former fiancé and his new wife, per Forbes.
Investigators initially believed Hadley had sent threatening emails, posted disturbing online messages and even created fake Craigslist advertisements inviting strangers to assault the couple, the Independent reports.
She was jailed for 88 days while facing charges that could have resulted in a life sentence.
However, the investigation eventually uncovered an extraordinary truth.
Authorities later concluded that Hadley had been framed by her ex-fiancé, former Deputy US Marshal Ian Diaz, and his wife Angela Connell, who had orchestrated an elaborate scheme designed to make it appear that Hadley was responsible.
According to prosecutors, the pair used fake email accounts, VPNs and fabricated evidence as part of the deception.
Connell later pleaded guilty to multiple felony charges, while Diaz was eventually convicted of conspiracy to commit cyberstalking, cyberstalking, perjury and obstruction of justice, receiving a federal prison sentence of more than 10 years.
Since being exonerated, Hadley has become an advocate for survivors of domestic abuse, focusing particularly on financial abuse after losing the savings she had invested in the home she once shared with Diaz.
