The harrowing drama has been praised by viewers taking to social media to discuss it.

One person writes: “Anyone giving it less than five stars is wrong. Quite possibly the best drama this year and we are only three months in.”

Somebody else says: “Absolutely hands down the best drama I have seen in a very long time.”

“British drama is certainly the best,” a third types. “This series is a must to watch and will have you captivated from the first to the last scene.”

Critics agree that the crime drama is worth the watch.

James Croot wrote for The Post NZ: “[The show] is a taut, thought-provoking and, at times, harrowing crime drama that you’re likely to polish off in a single sitting such is its power to grab, grip and hold your attention”

J. Kelly Nestruck reviewed for Globe and Mail: “This shows the world’s biggest streaming service is still taking big swings in the miniseries space at least. It’s still making television – art, if we can use that word – you’d never have seen in the pre-streaming days.

“An emotional powerhouse that sneaks up and floors you. The young TV season sets a new gold standard with a series to rank with the year’s very best,” ABC News’ Peter Travers said.

The miniseries has scored a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Philip Barantini directed the highly anticipated series, he is known for his single-shot intense feature film Boiling Point.

The gripping four-part series features co-creators Stephen Graham, Ashley Walter, and Christine Temarco.

The show’s lead character Jamie Miller, played by Owen Cooper, was just 14 years old at the time of filming and had no prior acting experience.

Director Baranti told Variety: “He just absolutely blew me away. Actors train for years and years and still can’t really master what Owen has mastered, which is basically just being in the moment and listening and being truthful.”

The overnight hit follows a 13-year-old boy who is accused of murdering his female classmate.

Graham told Netflix’s Tadum he was inspired to make the limited series by the growing knife crime rate in the U.K.

The actor shared: “It shocked me. I was thinking, ‘What’s going on? What’s happening in society where a boy stabs a girl to death? What’s the inciting incident here?’

“And then it happened again, and it happened again, and it happened again. I really just wanted to shine a light on it, and ask, ‘Why is this happening today? What’s going on? How have we come to this?’”

Each episode of Adolescence was filmed in one continuous single shot, allowing for an extremely intense watch.
