Hacksaw Ridge tells the true story of Pfc. Desmond T. Doss (Andrew Garfield), who was an American pacifist combat medic who refused to carry or use a weapon or firearm of any kind during WWII.
Despite being harshly treated by his fellow comrades for his beliefs, he saved 75 soldiers during the Battle of Okinawa.
Due to his actions, he would go on to win the Congressional Medal of Honor – the highest decoration a US soldier can be awarded.
Alongside Garfield, Hacksaw Ridge boasts an impressive cast including Vince Vaughn (Wedding Crashers), Sam Worthington (Avatar), Hugo Weaving (The Matrix franchise) and Teresa Palmer (Warm Bodies).
The film is also directed by Hollywood icon Mel Gibson, known for directing hard-hitting, graphic historical dramas such as The Passion Of The Christ and Apocalypto.

The film garnered a lot of praise for its gritty and realistic retelling of the Battle of Okinawa – with veteran Joe Clapper telling People: “It was graphic, but when you’ve been there, that’s what it’s like.”
Producer Bill Mechanic told the outlet that he and Gibson did make sure to tell an accurate story but did admit to leaving out some details.
He commented: “[Mel Gibson and I] were very accurate with Desmond and what happened to him.
“We were not accurate on some of the details around it. If you’re a slave to the complete facts, then you’re not making a movie that is compelling.”
