Society of the Snow dropped on Netflix this week – it’s based on a tragic true story.

The Uruguayan plane contained 40 passengers, who were primarily members of the Old Christians Club rugby union team, along with friends, family and supporters.

The pilot lost control of the plane and lost contact with air traffic control, eventually crashing the aircraft into the side of a mountain.

Three crew members and nine passengers died upon impact, and because the plane had lost contact with the outside world, rescue efforts initially started looking for survivors in the wrong place.

The plane’s wreckage was white, which made it impossible for rescuers to see it against the snowy background.

So after only a matter of days, the search was called off.

This led to the remaining passengers having to attempt to survive on only the meagre amounts of food left on the plane.

After a week, all food had run out, leaving the survivors having to have difficult conversations about how they could possibly keep going.

The group made the difficult decision to eat parts of the dead bodies of their former friends and teammates.

Learning on the transistor radio that the search parties had been called off, members of the surviving team began to go out to find help.

They eventually found the lost tail section of the plane, which contained some more food and supplies, although the batteries they hoped to bring back to camp were too large to carry.

A party were sent off the find civilisation on December 12.

Eventually, they managed to make contact with some men on horseback by the side of a river, who alerted authorities.

This prompted the beginning of the helicopter rescue of the rest of the survivors, which happened between December 22 and 23.

16 of the 45 plane passengers managed to survive the ordeal, many of whom have spoken out about the horrific decision they had to face to survive.
