Real-Life Horror Behind Movie Poltergeist As Multiple Cast Members Died After Release
There is a tragic behind-the-scenes story of the iconic Poltergeist movie, as multiple cast members died following its release.
Released in 1982, the horror remains one of the most iconic of its genre.
Directed by Tobe Hooper and produced by Steven Spielberg, the film follows the Freeling family as they experience paranormal disturbances in their suburban home.
But beyond the fictional hauntings on screen, the Poltergeist franchise is perhaps best remembered for the eerie events that plagued several of its actors, leading some to believe that the film itself was cursed.
Almost immediately after its release, stories began circulating that the Poltergeist franchise was cursed due to a string of unusual deaths and mishaps.
The curse theory was bolstered by the fact that four cast members died unexpectedly after their involvement in the series.
The deaths, while spread over a few years, were strange enough to fuel ongoing rumors of a supernatural element surrounding the production.
The most heart-wrenching death associated with the supposed curse was that of Heather O’Rourke, the young actress who portrayed Carol Anne Freeling, the youngest daughter in the Freeling family.

O’Rourke’s life, however, was tragically cut short.
In 1988, at the age of just 12, she passed away due to complications from a misdiagnosed intestinal blockage.
Initially thought to have been suffering from the flu, her condition rapidly worsened, leading to cardiac arrest and septic shock during surgery.
O’Rourke’s death shocked fans and further fueled talk of the Poltergeist curse.
Another tragic incident tied to the Poltergeist film involved actress Dominique Dunne, who portrayed Dana Freeling, the eldest daughter in the Freeling family.
Just months after the film’s release in 1982, Dunne was murdered at the age of 22.
In a shocking turn of events, Dunne was strangled by her ex-boyfriend, John Thomas Sweeney, outside her home in West Hollywood.
After an altercation, Sweeney attacked Dunne, leaving her in a coma from which she never recovered.
She died five days later, and her death left Hollywood reeling.
Sweeney was convicted of voluntary manslaughter, serving only a few years in prison, which sparked outrage and discussions about domestic violence in the entertainment industry.
The curse rumors didn’t stop with the deaths of the young actresses, as two other actors involved in the Poltergeist sequels also died under grim circumstances.
Julian Beck, who played the menacing Reverend Henry Kane in Poltergeist II: The Other Side, passed away from stomach cancer in 1985.
While Beck’s illness was known before he was cast in the film, his gaunt appearance and unsettling performance as the evil spirit contributed to the growing sense that something was amiss with the franchise.
Another death occurred in 1987 when Will Sampson, who portrayed the Native American shaman Taylor in Poltergeist II, died at 53 due to complications from a heart and lung transplant.
Sampson, a real-life spiritual healer, reportedly performed a cleansing ritual on the set of Poltergeist II to rid it of any negative energy.
While the deaths associated with Poltergeist are undeniably tragic, many have pointed out that they can be explained by natural causes or unfortunate circumstances.
O’Rourke’s death was due to a medical misdiagnosis, Dunne’s murder was a brutal act of domestic violence, and the deaths of Beck and Sampson were related to existing health issues.
However, the timing and the frequency of these deaths in connection with the films continue to provoke speculation.
Some have suggested that the use of real skeletons during a scene in the first Poltergeist film may have brought bad energy to the set.
Whether or not one believes in the idea of a curse, the eerie series of events surrounding the Poltergeist franchise has become an inescapable part of its lore.
