TikTok Shares What The Pull Cap On Cooking Oil Is Actually For
A cooking oil hack on TikTok shows what the pull cap on the bottle is actually for.
Cooking oil is a staple ingredient in most kitchens, used to fry, sauté and bake a variety of dishes.
There are many different types of cooking oils with unique flavours and smoke points.
And, as a viral TikTok video recently revealed, there’s even a secret hack to measuring out the oil which could change the way you cook forever.

Enthusiastic home cooks can easily ruin perfectly good food by pouring too much oil.
This can lead to dishes that are greasy, heavy, and unappetising.
The clip starts by showing someone opening a bottle of oil with a ring-pull cap.
It then reveals that instead of throwing it away, the cap can actually be used to measure the oil.
By inserting the cap back into the hole at the top of the bottle, turning it upside down, and then pouring out the oil, the cap acts as a barrier to control the amount of oil that comes out of the bottle.
This simple trick can help home cooks control how much oil they use, preventing too much from pouring out.
The video, posted on the Foodies TikTok channel, has caused some to declare that they have been ‘living a lie’ after discovering this new way of measuring out oil.

One person says: “How didn’t I know this until right now?!”
Somebody else asks: “So I don’t have to deal with the whole glug glug thing?”
“Why don’t they say this on the bottle? It makes sense,” a third writes.
Annoyed, another person comments: “Why didn’t I see this five minutes ago, I just threw mine away!!”
However, others have deemed the tip ‘unnecessary’ and say they prefer to continue using oil in the traditional way.
One writes: “Without the cap, I’m able to still my olive oil the same way.”
A second adds: “I don’t understand the purpose of this.”
“Why would you do that? It’s unnecessary, that’s what the plastic spikes are for,” another comments.

Used cooking oil should never be poured down the drain, as it can clog pipes and cause damage to sewage systems.
Instead, it can be recycled into biofuels, soaps, and other products.
Some cooking oils are more sustainable than others.
For example, palm oil production has been linked to deforestation and habitat destruction, while canola oil is often grown using sustainable farming practices.
