A World Cup fan, who is visiting the United States for a soccer game, has fallen in love with an American condiment, which she has since suggested is as addictive as crack.

Elsa Thora hails from Sweden, but has been traveling through Indiana, before heading to San Francisco and with plans to visit Dallas for Sweden’s match against Japan at the end of June.

The 24-year-old is then hoping to get her hands on tickets for the England vs Panama game in New York City, where she’s planning to stay through to America’s 250th anniversary celebration of the Fourth of July.

Discovering American culture

During her travels, it seems the influencer has been learning a great deal about American culture, from food delicacies to being surprised at what people are really like.

Speaking to the New York Post, Thora said: “People just talk to you, like random people, they say ‘hi’ on the street. It’s been the same in San Francisco, so far, to be fair as well.

“That does not happen in Sweden at all … people are very anti-social there, you barely speak to your neighbor.”

She went on to note all the other cool things that Americans seemingly take for granted, which particularly stand out to visitors coming over the US from overseas.

“The school buses are really cool, the firetrucks, obviously the diners are really cool,” Thora continued. “It’s literally all like the movies, I feel like I’m in a movie right now.”

In one post shared to X, formerly Twitter, she revealed one massive culture shock, which was discovering that Amish people ‘are real,’ and still live in many parts of America, and not just as fictional characters on our TV screens.

“I saw some Amish people and a horse and carriage, that was kind of crazy,” she said.

When discussing her travel plans, the young woman revealed she was most excited for experiencing the Fourth of July as she ‘loves how patriotic’ Americans are.

“I’d love to move to the USA! But it’s so hard for Europeans to move,” she added.

Other tourists are discovering America

Millions of people are set to descend on the US over the course of this summer, and plenty of tourists have been sharing their delight at getting stuck in with life on this side of the pond.

One person is German influencer Finn Agostinelli, who is currently touring Chicago and has been blown away by the concept of tailgating.

He said: “I fell in love with the tailgating before sporting events! We don’t really have that culture in Europe.

“The atmosphere is beautiful. Everyone invites you to their truck, gives you food and drinks, we made so many new friends!”

Meanwhile, a Scottish tourist who goes by the name of Shaun recently shared on X: “Every Scottish person in America needs to immediately try chicken fried steak, and you’ll realize we and the Americans are kindred spirits.”

The condiment that is ‘like crack’

Much like Shaun, one of Thora’s biggest cultural realizations has been the American food, and in particular a commonly eaten condiment which she has referred to as being like crack.

Sharing her love for it, she said: “It was amazing. I’ve said to lots of people that I won’t be able to live without it now. I’m gonna either have to try to order some online or make some myself.

“I don’t think it exists in Sweden … I’ve never ever seen it in Sweden, I’ve never seen it in the UK.”

Thora has found the substance so addictive, she’s had it on French fries, burgers and bacon wrapped tater tots.

Can you guess what it is yet? Yep… it’s ranch dressing. And yes, it is absolutely delicious.

Ranch is a real staple of American food since it’s creation by Steve Henson in the 1950s.

While it can be found at virtually any eatery in the States, it is actually pretty simple to make at home, typically made with buttermilk, mayonnaise, sour cream, and various different herbs depending on taste.
