Gary Lineker has come under fire for a tweet he made during England’s triumphant Euro 2022 victory over Germany.

After Chloe Kelly scored the winning goal in the 110th minute of the game, the Match Of The Day host tweeted: “The @Lionesses have only gone and done it, and Kelly is England’s heroine, bra none.”

Moments later, it was removed. However, that still hasn’t stopped people criticising Lineker across social media.

On Twitter, one person posted: “87k+ fans in the stadium, 17.4 million watching on TV. Winning a tournament that the men’s team have not done. A magnificent achievement. You still get the highest paid BBC presenter @GaryLineker making comments about Chloe Kelly taking her shirt off. Yes, it’s deleted but still was made.”

Someone else tweeted: “No his deleted tweet which included a ‘pun’ about a bra – because – you know it’s women’s football innit. He deleted it because he got called out by lots of women and because it unleashed lots of blatant sexism from men in the comments. No apology or reflection on that though – obvs.”

“I wonder why he’s deleted it then. Rather than congratulate them he chose to make a cheap joke about lady’s underwear,” a third commented.

Lineker has since issued an explanation of his tweet.

He wrote: “It was just a play on words given the celebration. I do rubbish like that constantly on here, including on men’s football. I’ve deleted it as many people didn’t see the game so missed the context.”

However, some people are still unhappy with him as he has not properly apologised and described the message as ‘tone-deaf’.

England’s Lionesses’ win yesterday was the country’s first victory at a major tournament since the men’s team won the World Cup in 1966.
