The ‘Without Me’ singer temporarily took a break from interviews after they said the press didn’t respect their use of both she/her and they/them pronouns.

Halsey – whose real name is Ashley Nicolette Frangipane – is a Grammy-nominated artist who has been involved in chart-topping hits such as ‘Closer’ and ‘Eastside’.

The ‘Him & I’ singer announced via Instagram that they would go by she/they pronouns in 2021.

Along with updating their info in their bio, Halsey wrote at the time: “For those asking RE: my updated Instagram bio, I am happy with either pronoun.

“The inclusion of ‘they’, in addition to ‘she’, feels most authentic to me. If you know me at all you know what it means to me to express this outwardly. Thanks for being the best.”

However, after being misrepresented in an interview with a magazine, the 28-year-old took to social media to announce that they were no longer doing any interviews for the time being.

In a series of deleted posts on X (previously known as Twitter), the ‘Walls Could Talk’ singer said: “First, your writer made a focal point in my cover story my pronouns and you guys deliberately disrespected them by not using them in the article.

“Then your admin b*******sed a quote where I discuss the privilege of being the white child of a black parent and intentionally used a portion that was the antithesis of the point I was trying to make.”

Halsey then noted the irony of the magazine’s blunder as the artist said they had told the interviewer they ‘hate doing press because I get exploited and misquoted’.

They ended their posts by writing: “Do f***ing better…? #NoMorePress goodbye.”

The magazine did apologise for its mistake, with the brand stating: “We’ve heard your feedback and you’re absolutely right: we messed up. We are adjusting our cover story with Halsey to use both ‘she’ and ‘they’ pronouns.”

A source close to the brand spoke to Page Six and added that the magazine ‘worked closely with Halsey’s team leading up to the release of the story and all parties were pleased with the content’.

The source also mentioned that Halsey’s pronouns were updated in the story hours after it was released.

Halsey has previously mentioned how their ideas of changing their pronouns occurred after becoming pregnant with their first child.

Sharing a selfie on Instagram, they wrote: “I thought pregnancy would give me very strong, binary feelings about ‘womanhood’ but truly it has levelled my perception of gender entirely.

“My sensitivity to my body has made me hyper-aware of my humanness and that’s all. Doing a remarkable thing. And it’s grand. I hope the feeling lasts.”

Halsey and their boyfriend, Alev Aydin, welcomed their baby, Ender, on July 14, 2021.
